STILLWATER, Okla. ā Oklahoma fell to No. 10 Oklahoma State, 27-8, in Stillwater to conclude the team's regular season road slate. The Sooners won two of the first three bouts, but were unable to find team points down the stretch.Ā
"I've got some mixed emotions," head coach
Lou Rosselli said after the dual. "I thought there were some really good things, especially at 174, 197 and 141. There were some really good fights in other weight classes too, but there were a few where we didn't fight enough."
The dual started with an electric bout between No. 12
Anthony Mantanona (OU) vs. No. 11 Joe Smith. Mantanona trailed Smith 5-2 after the second period, but scored an escape point, followed by a takedown and four-point nearfall to silence Gallagher-Iba Arena. The redshirt sophomore got the Sooners on the board with a 10-5 decision, putting OU (4-7 overall, 2-6 Big 12) up 3-0 to start the day.
At 184, OU's
Darrien Roberts dropped a heated bout to No. 16 Anthony Montalvo, 4-0. After the bout, both teams were deducted a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct, tying the match at 2-2.
No. 15
Jake Woodley took the mat next for the Sooners vs. No. 11 Dakota Geer in a top-15 bout. Similar to the bout at 174, the Sooners' wrestler trailed after two periods, but was able to score multiple takedowns to win in the final frame as Woodley scored a takedown with just under 30 seconds left in the bout to earn a 10-9 decision, giving the Sooners a 5-2 lead. The ranked win was Woodley's third of the season, and he avenged an earlier loss to Geer.Ā
"Woodley's win is so significant." Rosselli said. "It's important to come into a hostile environment and him being so youngā¦he had four or five takedowns, and got some finishes. He was in a heater and both guys are good, so it should be interesting in the postseason."
Collin McCoy wrestled for Oklahoma at heavyweight but suffered a loss via 13-5 major decision to Austin Harris.Ā
The final match before the break was at 125 pounds and featured OU's
Christian Moody vs. No. 4 Nick Piccininni. Moody came out firing and trailed 9-8 after two frames. But Piccininni was able to pin Moody in the third period, giving the Cowboys (13-2 overall, 7-1 Big 12) a 12-5 lead at intermission.
After the break,
Tommy Hoskins wrestled for OU at 133, but lost an 11-7 decision to No. 18 Reece Witcraft.
Oklahoma would get back on track at 141 pounds when reigning Big 12 champion
Dom Demas beat No. 19 Dusty Hone via decision, 4-3, after a third period takedown. With the win, Demas improved to 22-3 on the season, and 10-1 in duals.
Trailing 15-8 with three bouts remaining,
Jacob Butler took the mat at 149 for the Sooners vs. No. 6 Boo Lewallen. Butler would be on the wrong side of a 14-1 major decision, putting the Cowboys up 19-8.
At 157, No. 22
Justin Thomas (OU) was taken down a pair of times in the third period and lost to No. 18 Wyatt Sheets via decision, 8-3.
The final bout of the day came at 165 and featured OU's
Elijah Joseph lost via tech fall to No. 9 Travis Wittlake, finalizing the victory for the Cowboys.
