Relive the Best of Billy Ball on SoonerSports.tv
November 05, 2020 | Men's Basketball
As OU continues to pay tribute to the late Billy Tubbs, SoonerSports.tv has compiled 27 classic games that help capture the heated competition, frantic "Billy Ball" playing style and unforgettable moments from his time as head coach. Fans can stream the original broadcasts on demand with a SoonerSports.tv premium membership through the Sooner Sports apps for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Amazon Fire and Roku.
The classic broadcasts cover the 1984-1990 seasons when OU was at the height of its dominance under Tubbs. Included in the collection are historic performances by Sooner legends, conference championship wins and some of the highest-scoring games in college basketball history.
SoonerSports.com has identified five fan favorites to start with, listed below.
In addition to the on-demand classic games, Fox Sports Oklahoma will re-air the Billy Tubbs Reunion Special four times over the next two weeks, beginning on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. CT. Filmed in 2014, the two-hour special features candid conversation among Tubbs, his former players and staff members and others.
The first hour focuses on Tubbs' journey to OU from Lamar as well as his recruiting and coaching philosophies with the Sooners. Tubbs also reminisces about when his 1983-84 Sooners cut down the net at Kansas' Allen Fieldhouse after a Big Eight-title-clinching win over the Jayhawks.
Additional topics explored in the second hour of the program include the "Billy Ball" style of play, three-time All-American Wayman Tisdale, the 1987-88 team that played in the national championship game, Tubbs taking the public address microphone vs. Missouri in 1989, OU's 173-point game in 1989-90 and tails from the recruiting trail.
Billy Takes the Microphone
Feb. 9, 1989 vs. MissouriNo moment in OU basketball history is discussed with more reverence, disbelief and comedy. With his fifth-ranked Sooners trailing No. 3 Missouri 21-8, the home crowd was displaying its displeasure at the officials. Tubbs was asked by referee Ed Hightower to make a public address announcement to discourage the OU fans from throwing objects onto the court. Tubbs cooperated...sort of.
"The referees request that regardless of how terrible the officiating is, do not throw stuff on the floor."
The crowd erupted, Tubbs was given a technical and the Sooners used the momentum to fight all the way back and win the top-five matchup.
Due to issues with the original broadcast copy, the final minutes of this game are not available.
Wayman Dazzles in the Dome
Jan. 7, 1984 at Syracuse
With an opportunity to showcase his rising stars on national television, Tubbs agreed to take his Sooner squad to the Carrier Dome in 1984 for a non-conference matchup with Jim Boeheim and Syracuse. The Sooners bested the Orangemen in a high-scoring 98-90 victory as Wayman Tisdale scored 33 points. The national exposure on CBS took the unranked Sooners and placed them in the AP Poll the following week as they headed into Big Eight play.
King's Knockout Punch
Jan. 28, 1989 at UNLVWhen you're in Las Vegas, you expect to see a great show. Stacey King did just that, scoring a career-high 48 points to lead the No. 4 ranked-Sooners past No. 13 UNLV in a narrow 90-88 victory. King, Tubbs and the Sooners welcomed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson into the visiting locker room after the big win. The Sooners would go on to win the Big Eight title that season while Jerry Tarkanian's Runnin' Rebels would win the NCAA Championship the following season.
The Highest-Scoring Half in NCAA History
Nov. 29, 1989 vs. US International
Tubbs' Sooners reached 100 points in 128 games during his tenure, but not offense performance compares to OU's 173-101 win over U.S. International, which was a Division I school from San Diego. Oklahoma scored 97 points in the first 19 minutes of the game before missing four straight 3-point attempts that would've hit the century mark before halftime. To this day, OU's performance is etched in the NCAA record book for the most points in a half, most field goals in a half, most field goal attempts in a half and most field goal attempts in a game.
Down Goes No. 1...Again
Feb. 25 vs. Missouri | Feb. 27 vs. KansasOklahoma boasted a perfect 4-0 record at home when facing No. 1 ranked teams during the Tubbs era, but faced its toughest challenge when facing two top-ranked squads in a three-day stretch during the 1989-90 season. Oklahoma defeated No. 1 Missouri 107-90 on Sunday, Feb. 25. When the new AP Top 25 was released, Kansas took the Tigers' place on top. The newly-named No. 1 Jayhawks then faced the Sooners on Tuesday, where Tubbs oversaw another double-digit victory over the top team in the land. The Sooners then earned the No. 1 spot in next week's pole and later the No. 1 position heading into the NCAA Tournament.
