NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team wrapped up the fall slate of the 2020 season with a 3-1 loss to No. 14 West Virginia Friday night inside McCasland Field House.
West Virginia took the match 21-25, 20-25, 27-25, 20-25. OU fell to a mark of 3-9 in the fall while WVU improved to 8-8.
The Sooners were narrowly out-hit by West Virginia .271 to .267, though OU had the advantage in kills, 58-56. OU also held the advantage in assists, 57-49. West Virginia out-dug the Sooners, 59-56.
Freshman
Guewe Diouf set an OU program-record with a career-high 28 kills on the night. She surpassed former Sooner Alyssa Enneking who notched 27 in a four-set match in 2018.
Diouf has now notched double digit digs in 11 of 12 matches and reached the 20-kill mark four times. Diouf also notched her third double-double of the season with 12 digs.
Sanaa Dotson added 14 kills on the night and
Sarah Maras tallied 10.
Sam Anthony set a career-high with 27 assists on the night with
Grace Talpash chipping in 14.
Defensively,
Keyton Kinley ked the team with 21 digs while Anthony added eight. Of OU's eight blocks,
Abby Butler and
Tyler Alcorn each recorded a solo block. Alcorn tallied four on the night along with
Sarah Sanders.
West Virginia took the first set, 25-21. The Sooners used a late 4-0 run to pull within three at 22-19 but couldn't hold off the Mountaineers. In set two, the teams traded points up to 10-10 when WVU used a 4-0 run to take the lead. OU made it a two-point set at 15-13, however the Mountaineers would use another 3-0 run to extend the lead and take the set, 25-20.
The Sooners took set three, 27-25. After taking the lead at 16-13, the teams found themselves tied again at 19-all. The teams traded points up to 25-25 before a Sanders kill clinched the set for OU.
The Sooners raced out to a 5-2 lead in the fourth set. West Virginia pulled even at 6-all and with a 7-1 run pulled ahead 10-7. OU kept it close pulling it to 18-16 late. West Virginia utilized a 7-4 run to close out the set and clinch the match.
