November 10, 2020 | Wrestling

NORMAN – Oklahoma wrestling head coach Lou Rosselli announced the signing of two wrestlers in the 2021 class on Wednesday. Joining the Sooners in the 2021-22 season will be Tate Picklo and Alejandro Herrera-Rondon, two of the nation's top prospects.

Picklo will come to Norman from Mustang, Okla., where the two-time 6A state champion has cemented himself as the No. 1 prospect in the country at 195 lbs. The two-time Fargo All-American recently defeated Seth Shumate in the "Who's #1" event via 3-1 decision to claim the country's top spot at 195.

"We are excited to have an incredible prospect like Tate join OU wrestling," Rosselli said. "He is an in-state recruit and one that is ranked No. 1 in the country. On top of that, he is a great student and we can't wait for him to get to campus."

Picklo, one of the most sought after student-athletes in the country is a member of the Greco World Team and has gone undefeated at the prep level in his last two seasons, earning The Oklahoman's All-City Wrestler of the Year award in 2020.

"I couldn't be more excited to sign with the University of Oklahoma because it's going to offer me everything that I need to succeed in life," Picklo said on Wednesday. "I believe that we have the best coaching staff and facilities in the country, and I know that Norman is a place that I can make myself one of the greatest to ever do it. I can also get a great education at Oklahoma and that will set me up to succeed in every aspect of life."

The other future Sooner joining the program is Alejandro Herrera-Rondon from Seneca Valley High School which is just north of Pittsburgh, Pa.

Herrera-Rondon, a projected 149-pounder, will join Rosselli's program as one of the highest rated prospects in the nation per Track Wrestling and two-time state champion in the state of Pennsylvania at 132 pounds. The standout has compiled a 136-14 record in high school, earning bonus points in 74 of those matches.

"Alejandro is a great prospect from Pennsylvania who just loves to wrestle," Rosselli said. "We look forward to having him in the room and look forward to what he can do. It's exciting to get these types of wrestlers into our program."

Herrera-Rondon spent time as the No. 1 prospect in the country at 113 pounds in 2019. As a sophomore he was named to the USA Today's boys' wrestling all-star team after taking seventh at Cadet Freestyle Nationals.

"I chose to come to OU because it's the best place to reach your academic and athletic goals," Herrera-Rondon said. "I know that the University of Oklahoma will take me places that I wouldn't have even imagined. With all of that, you've got a big family right by your side, ready to push you into the best person you can be."

The pair will join the team in the fall of 2021.

The Sooners are set for the 2021 season which is slated to open in January. Rosselli's team returns five NCAA qualifiers and has wrestlers ranked in nine different weight classes.
