NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma soccer team dropped its match Friday night to Iowa State, 0-1, on John Crain Field in Norman.
"We always talk about an upward trend and what you saw in the last 25 minutes was the expectation in terms of performance," said OU head coach Mark Carr. "Unfortunately, we didn't have that consistently for 90 minutes and that caused some problems. We made some adjustments. I thought once we made those adjustments we did better, but there needs to be a certain level of grit, fight, desire and will for 90-plus minutes.
"What I do know is this group will be hungry to bounce back and give a better performance against K-State next week."
The Sooners (0-2-1) outshot the Cyclones (2-3) by a tally of 13-9 on the evening but ISU led in looks on goal by a 6-5 count.
OU saw opportunities in the first half, leading ISU in shots at the break, 8-3. In the 17th minute, the Sooners saw three consecutive shots in the middle of the box that were blocked by the ISU backline.
In the 51st minute, freshman Cailey England's shot from the outside right of the 18-yard box nearly bent around the ISU keeper to the left post.
The game continued to be a scoreless battle until the 65th minute when Cyclone Mira Emma bent a ball into the back of the net on a corner kick.
The Sooners responded with a handful of attacks following ISU's go-ahead goal. In the 71st minute, sophomore Caroline Berutti put a header on goal before senior Reagan Glisson saw a shot sail high in the 75th minute.
Glisson had one additional look in the 81st minute that sailed wide right. She led OU on the night with three shots while juniors Megan Reilly and Lauren Tovy, sophomore Maya McCutcheon and England all saw two looks a piece.
Senior Nikki Panas registered five saves on the night.
OU returns to the pitch next Friday, Oct. 16 for a matchup against Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. CT start and will be available to watch via Big 12 NOW on ESPN+.
