NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma soccer team dropped Friday night's match to No. 4 TCU, 1-0, at John Crain Field on senior night in Norman.
"The result is tough for these kids with how much work they put in and come out here and grind every day," said OU head coach Mark Carr. "That's two really good performances, back-to-back, against the No. 6 and No. 4 teams in the country.
"We played together and showed our grittiness there at the end with some of our set pieces. To control moments and be on the front foot against a good TCU team showed that we don't back down and we won't go away. I'm immensely proud of how we played tonight."
The Sooners (0-5-1) took another top-ranked team to the wire after dropping last week's contest to No. 6 West Virginia by the same count, 1-0.
OU saw one of its best looks of the night early in the match with senior Erika Yost taking a shot from just inside the top right corner of the 18-yard box off a pass from junior Bri Amos.
The match continued as a scoreless battle into the second half before the Horned Frogs (7-0-1) found the back of the net for the game's only goal in the 73rd minute. TCU's Grace Collins snuck the ball through the hands of a diving Nikki Panas to give TCU the advantage.
OU answered with a flurry of attacks with the best look coming from junior Megan Reilly in the 79th minute. Reilly lasered a ball from just outside the 18 box off a nice feed from freshman Abby Mitchell.
Reilly and senior Yuuka Kurosaki led the way for OU in shots, each with a pair. Yost, senior Reagan Glisson, junior Cameron Tharp and freshman Cailey England all had one look a piece with Yost and Glisson both putting their shots on goal.
Panas had another solid night in goal for the Sooners, making seven saves.
Prior to Friday's contest, OU's six seniors were honored on the field. Carr spoke on the importance of the group postgame.
"They're all great young women. When those videos play on the scoreboard, it shows how many people love them and have been a part of their journey. There were plenty of tears but that's what they deserve.
"These seniors have been nothing but bought in to what I've asked of them and they're laying the foundation of what's to come. We don't know what next year will look like but just an incredible group of young women that I'm privileged to work with every single day."
OU hits the road for the first time in three weeks for a matchup with Baylor next Friday night in Waco, Texas. The match is set for a 7 p.m. kick and will air live on Big 12 NOW on ESPN+.
