NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team earned its first sweep of the season, taking down Kansas 28-26, 25-22, 25-20 inside McCasland Field House Saturday afternoon.
OU improved to 2-4 on the season and has now won six straight sets going back to Friday night's match. For the second year in a row, the Sooners took both matches from Kansas.
"Winning can help you a lot," head coach
Lindsey Gray-Walton said. "Even sets kind of are moral wins but when you can finally get a W in a match, you can feel accomplished like, 'yeah, we put all the pieces together and there's the final puzzle.' So, tonight, to see the emotional and physical recovery we needed to do - because last night took a lot out of us, and I think that's what we learned about the time at Baylor. For this group to come out and do that, was it pretty at times? Not always, but not as many strings of points, runs of points as we saw last night that got us into that five set situation. That was our focus today - could we clean up a couple of defensive positional errors and where we needed to be and make plays easier, quite honestly, and we did that tonight. That's a call to respond and that's awesome."
The Sooners outhit the Jayhawks .163 to .103 on the night and led in kills with a 38-31 advantage.
Guewe Diouf led the offense with 14 kills, her sixth consecutive double-digit kill performance.
Tyler Alcorn added seven kills on a .385 clip, while Sanaa Dotson added six kills and
Sarah Maras notched five.
"Last night Tyler was kind of bummed," Gray-Walton said. "She was like 'I made some bonehead plays, I know I can be better and a bigger presence.' You love that out of a freshman ... she is someone that is an ultra-competitor. She's kind of sneaky like that, like that's a stat line that you're like ok, that's great. Does her job, does her role, physical and getting in on the action there at the net to finish off the game. Tyler's going to be a bright spot and I would expect her to keep chipping away at all the possibilities. Don't count her out for not playing six rotations."
Setter
Grace Talpash picked up 28 assists on the night and added five digs and one kill.
The two teams were matched equally with both squads picking up eight blocks on the night. Alcorn got in on six to lead all players, while Diouf was in on three.
Keyton Kinley and Diouf each tallied eight digs on the night.
Kansas jumped out to a 5-0 lead early in the first set, but the Sooners stormed back and forced the set to a tie at 18-all. Facing set point, the Sooners used a Kansas error to take set one, 28-26.
Trailing 19-15 in the second set, the Sooners used a 6-0 run to take the lead. Diouf secured the 25-22 set win with her ninth kill of the night.
In the final set, the Sooners took an early lead before Kansas tied the match at 10-all. The teams went back-and-forth up to a tie at 16-all before the Sooners used a 9-4 run to secure the final set, 25-20.
The Sooners will travel to Manhattan, Kan., for a pair of matches at Kansas State Oct. 22-23.
