Perfect Monday as Sooners Sweep Bryant, ORU

NORMAN – The No. 22 Oklahoma men's tennis team swept the day of competition, shutting out Bryant 7-0 before powering past Oral Roberts 4-0 on Monday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

With the wins, OU improves to 3-1 on the season.

"I really liked the way our guys came out in doubles," said head coach Nick Crowell. "It was really business-like. We worked on a lot of things this week from the past weekend's matches and I saw a lot of different improvement in a lot of different areas. We came out and carried that on into singles. Our guys looked really good today.

All three of our freshmen came out and are doing a great job early in January. It's really hard for freshmen to come on in January and adapt early, but these guys have been unbelievable and I'm looking forward to great things in the future."

Against Bryant, OU powered through doubles and gave up just one game across the three matches. Mason Beiler and Justin Schlageter got the first win for OU, shutting out Andrew Corrado and Alexander Schou 6-0 on court three. Jake Van Emburgh and Max Stewart clinched the point with a 6-1 win over Wilson Dong and Trent Massam at the top spot, just moments before Jochen Bertsch and Mark Mandlik swept Grant Pertile and Philip Belmatch 6-0 on court two.

In singles action, Schlageter was the first Sooner off the court with a 6-2, 6-1 rout of Belmatch on court five. No. 116 Bertsch struck next for the Sooners, giving up just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Massam at the No. 2 line. Freshman Alex Martinez clinched the contest when he defeated Anshumat Srivastava 6-1, 6-2 on court four.

The remaining courts played out. Jake Van Emburgh rolled past Dong 6-3, 6-2 at the top spot while Stewart defeated Andrew Forchetti 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot and Mandlik completed the sweep with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Pertile on court three.

In the Oral Roberts match, OU once again claimed the doubles point to start the match. Bertsch and Martinez grabbed the first win with a 6-2 rout of Eddy Leardini and Jonathan Evans on court three. Van Emburgh and Stewart defeated Geronimo Busleiman and Barnabas Koncz 6-4 at the No. 1 line to clinch the point. When play was halted, Schlageter and Beiler led Mert Celik and Andre Russ 4-3 on court two.

Schlageter was once again the first Sooner to finish his match, flying past Leardini 6-1, 6-1 on court five. No. 116 Bertsch played a near-perfect match as he defeated Russo 6-1, 6-0. Stewart claimed the match for the Sooenrs with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Evans on court six.

When the match was abandoned, No. 50 Beiler led Busleiman 6-2, 3-0 at the No. 1 line; Mandlik trailed Koncz 2-1 in the second set on court two after claiming the first 6-4; and Martinez was down 2-1 in the second set on court four after he took the opening stanza 6-4.

OU heads to Starkville, Miss., Friday for ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Sooners will meet South Carolina in the first round while Georgia and host Mississippi State square off on the other side of the bracket. The winners of those matches will face each other Sunday with a trip to the ITA Indoor National Championships on the line.
