Seniors Lead Sooners Past Sun Devils

September 08, 2019 | Soccer

TEMPE, Ariz - The senior duo of Kaylee Dao and Ivanna Rivas led the Oklahoma soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Arizona State Sunday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

The Sooners improved to 4-1-1 on the year and picked up their third road win of the season. With the victory, OU snapped Arizona State's five-game winning streak.

"The manner of this result is very pleasing for the coaching staff," head coach Matt Potter said. "To say we are proud of the group would be an understatement. The response to Friday, the challenges of playing a top team on the road from the Pac-12, to go ahead and have chances to put the game away, then to have momentum swing the other way, we had to dig deep and fight. It was incredible. We will enjoy the moment then ready ourselves for the next one."

Rivas notched the game-winner in the 83rd minute as she picked up her first goal of the season. With the ball bouncing around inside the six-yard box, Rivas needed just one touch to slot the ball past the ASU keeper and put the Sooners up 2-1.

The Sooners notched just their second first-half goal of the season on a penalty kick by Dao in the 20th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Lauren Tovy made a long run down the right side of the field and was fouled in the box to set up the penalty attempt. Dao has now scored in four of six games this season and converted both penalty attempts on the year.

Arizona State found the equalizer in the 77th minute on a goal by Nicole Douglas. Marleen Schimmer crossed the ball to a waiting Douglas who headed the ball into the far corner.

Sophomore keeper Megan McClay had an outstanding performance, setting a career high with five saves and picking up her third win of the season. In the late minutes, McClay made some impressive saves to keep the Sun Devils from taking the lead.

"Megan came in today and did exactly what we believed she could do," Potter said. "The GK position is proving to be competitive and we have belief in the group and tonight Megan played her part. Delighted for her and the team."

OU narrowly outshot the Sun Devils, 12-10, while holding a 7-6 shot on goal advantage. Dao and Tovy led the way with three shots apiece and eight different Sooners recorded at least one shot.

OU will travel back to the Midwest for a pair of matches in Nebraska this weekend. The Sooners will face Nebraska on Friday at 7:05 p.m. CT and Creighton on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. Ā
