September 04, 2019 | Wrestling

NORMAN – Oklahoma wrestling head coach Lou Rosselli and Vice President and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione announced the Sooners' 2019-2020 schedule on Wednesday.

"I feel really good about our schedule," said fourth-year head coach Lou Rosselli. "We'll have a good balance of competition that should get us ready for the NCAA Tournament."

The Sooners open the season in East Lansing, Mich., at the Michigan State Open on Nov. 2. It will mark the third consecutive season Oklahoma will start the year at the event, and the Sooners will look to improve on nine top-five finishes from the 2018 tournament.

Following the season opener, the squad will head to the Journeymen Collegiate Classic Nov. 10 in Troy, N.Y., followed by a trip to Kent, Ohio, for the Kent State Tri Nov. 16. OU will wrap up its stretch on the road competing at the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., Dec. 6-7.

"Vegas is always a good opportunity to show where you're at with your wrestling," said Rosselli. "You've really got to do your leg work at the beginning to make sure you're ready to go."

The Sooners are set to make their home debut on Dec. 15 with the first of two Bedlam matches slated for 2019-20. The team will then head to th Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., just outside Chicago, for the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Dec. 29-30.

OU travels to Ohio University to dual the Bobcats on Jan. 5 before returning home to face West Virginia on Jan. 19. The Sooners will then spend a weekend in the Dakotas, squaring off with North Dakota State on Jan. 24 in Fargo, N.D., and South Dakota State on Jan. 26 in Brookings, S.D.

Oklahoma returns to McCasland Field House in Norman for three consecutive home matches against Northern Iowa (Feb. 1), Iowa State (Feb. 9) and Air Force (Feb. 14) before making the trek to Stillwater for the second Bedlam match of the season on Feb. 16. The regular season comes to a close on Feb. 23 with a home dual against Fresno State.

The Big 12 Championships return to Tulsa's BOK Center for the fourth consecutive season on March 7-8, followed by the 2020 NCAA Wrestling Championships from March 19-21 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn.

The Sooners return an experienced squad from 2018-19, including NCAA qualifiers Christian Moody, Dom Demas, Justin Thomas and Jake Woodley. Demas, who became the 274th All-American wrestler in OU history in 2019, looks to defend his Big 12 Championship at 141 pounds, while Thomas searches for his own Big 12 title after finishing runner-up at 157 pounds last season.
