NORMAN – The Oklahoma soccer team dropped its first overtime match of the season, 3-2, to SMU Friday night at John Crain Field.
SMU (7-1-0) netted the game-winning golden goal in the 101st minute off the foot of Allie Thornton. Thornton received a pass from Hailey Bishop while on the run and took one touch before sending the ball into the back of the net from 12 yards out.
The Sooners (4-3-2) overcame a 2-1 deficit to force their fifth overtime game of the year. Tied at 2-all, senior Kristina O'Donnell was fouled in the box setting up a potential golden goal penalty kick 14 seconds in to the first overtime. Senior Kaylee Dao lined up for the shot but sent her attempt over the crossbar.
'I think we were disappointed with our own personal performance, but we showed some character and some competitive spirit to keep plugging away and plugging away," head coach Matt Potter said. "While we will be disappointed about the result, we showed some things that are going to have to continue to evolve in the season. I think one of the areas that we need to do a better job is in our possession. In the attacking, we need to show just a little bit of composure to take care of our opportunities. We'll fight another day and that's Sunday."
The two teams played to a scoreless draw after the first 45 minutes, setting up an intense second half. SMU got on the board first in the 60th minute off a free kick. Celiana Torres took the kick from 25 yards out, slotting the ball inside the near post.
Just four minutes later, the Sooners would tie things up as Dao netted her third penalty kick of the season. Dao now has seven goals this season, surpassing her previous season high of six.
The tie wouldn't last long as the Mustangs would once again take the lead. Thornton dribbled past the OU defense and took a shot from 18-yards out into the far post. The ball took one bounce off the post into the back of the net for the 2-1 lead.
Freshman Maya McCutcheon would tie the game at 2-2 on her first goal of the year in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Jazzy Richards crossed the ball in at the top of the 18 yard box, finding McCutcheon in the middle of a scrum. McCutcheon needed just one touch to find the back of the net and earn her first career goal.
"It was a really cool feeling to get your first college goal," McCutcheon said. "It was a key moment in tying it up. It was really cool, especially since there are so many freshmen contributing, so it was cool to contribute in my own ways. It was definitely a team effort as well".
The Mustangs held the shot advantage, 12-8, including a narrow 7-6 shot on goal advantage. SMU keeper Tatum Sutherland improved to 7-1 in net with five saves, while OU sophomore Megan McClay dropped to 3-2-1 on the year with three saves on the night.
The Sooners will wrap up the non-conference slate on Sunday against Houston. Kickoff is slated for a 1 p.m. start on Fox Sports Oklahoma.
