NORMAN – In the first edition of Bedlam soccer, the Sooners fought to a 2-2 draw with Oklahoma State Thursday night at John Crain Field. OU improved to 2-0-1 on the season, while the Cowgirls moved to 1-0-1.
Senior Kaylee Dao was the difference maker, netting a pair of goals in the second half with the Sooners down 2-0. The Tulsa, Okla., native had one of her best offensive performances as she tallied eight shots with six on goal. Dao is now ranked fifth for most goals scored in OU program history with 19.
"Words almost don't do (her performance) justice," head coach Matt Potter said. "Kaylee Dao is definitely showing the qualities that she can play at the next level. She has the qualities to take over games. She's everything we would have imagined her to be tonight. I'm just really excited for her. We obviously feed off her energy and feed off her performances."
Dao's first goal of the night came off a penalty kick in the 75th minute after an OSU handball. Dao easily converted the attempt, making it a 2-1 game.
With just three minutes to go in regulation, Dao once again found the back of the net. From the corner of the 18-yard box, Dao sent a cross into the opposite corner to pull the Sooners even with the Cowgirls in the 87th minute.
"I think for me, it's all about putting everything I have in every game," Dao said. "I can honestly say that I put everything I have into that game. For me, it's just a great way to end Bedlam at home. I wish we could've gotten the win, but to have such a performance feels really good."
Oklahoma State took the lead in the 26th minute off a goal from Jaci Jones. Jones took a shot from 18 yards out across the box and out of the reach of a diving Nikki Panas.
In the 65th minute, the Cowgirls extended their lead to 2-0, once again on a goal from Jones. The Cowgirl took a shot from close range, finding the upper corner of the goal.
The Sooners dominated the overtime periods, outshooting the Cowgirls 7-2 in the final 20 minutes of play. Oklahoma had all the offense as Dao, senior Ivanna Rivas, freshman Jordan Lund and senior Kristina O'Donnell all came within inches of finding the back of the net to end the game.
OU outshot its opponent 19-9 on the game, recording nine shots on goal to OSU's four.
The Sooners will stay in the state of Oklahoma for their next game, traveling to Tulsa on Sunday, Sept. 1. The match is set for a 7:30 p.m. CT start.
