Thomas, Demas Headed to Big 12 Finals

March 09, 2019 | Wrestling

TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma wrestling team completed day one at the 2019 Big 12 Wrestling Championships with two Sooners earning a spot in the finals of their respective weight classes. Dom Demas (141) and Justin Thomas (157) will wrestle in tomorrow's championship matches.

Oklahoma sits in fourth place with 56.5 team points through the first day of competition.

Demas advanced to the final by virtue of a 3-2 win over Wyoming's Sam Turner in the quarterfinal and an 8-5 decision against Sam Parker (Iowa State) in the semifinal. By earning a spot in the championship, Demas has punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships.

The Ohio native will face Oklahoma State's Kaid Brock in the final. Demas upset then-No. 4 Brock in the first dual match of the season as the only Sooner to come away with a win at OSU.

Thomas' path included a 5-1 decision of Colten Carlson (SDSU) in the quarterfinals and a 13-8 win over North Dakota State's Luke Weber in the semifinal.

Thomas will meet Chase Straw of Iowa State in the championship. The winner will be the Big 12's sole representative at the NCAA Championships, as the conference has been allocated just one spot at 157.

Three more Sooners are still alive in consolation. Christian Moody (125), Davion Jeffries (149) and Jake Woodley (197) will all compete in the consolation semifinals in their weight classes.

Moody received a bye in the first round, then dropped to Brent Fleetwood (NDSU) 3-1 after a sudden-victory overtime. Moody rebounded in the first round of consolation, defeating Air Force's Sidney Flores 11-5. The Sooner then took down Cole Verner of Wyoming 3-2 to move on. Moody will face Rico Montoya (Northern Colorado) tomorrow in the consolation semifinal.

Jeffries pinned Utah Valley's Matthew Ontiveros in 2:04 in the first round of the 149 bracket. The senior then dropped a narrow contest to Jarret Degen on Iowa State to move into consolation.

Trailing 5-4 with under a minute to go in the third period, Jeffries used a pin to stay alive, defeating Dante Rodriguez of Northern Colorado by fall in 6:47. In the following round, Jeffries routed Northern Iowa's Max Thomsen 15-5. He awaits Khristian Olivas (Fresno State).

Woodley received a first-round bye, then defeated UVU's Tanner Orndorff 13-8 in the quarterfinal. In the semi, the redshirt freshman was defeated by Preston Weigel of Oklahoma State 13-0 to move into the consolation bracket. Woodley will face West Virginia's Noah Adams.

Elsewhere in the tournament, Freshman Anthony Madrigal (133) picked up two major decisions on the day. The first was a 10-0 win over Isaiah Delgado (UVU) in the first round. Madrigal was defeated by Wyoming's Montorie Bridges 18-1 in the quarterfinal, but tallied his second major decision in a 10-1 win against Sean Cannon of Northern Colorado before he was eliminated by Northern Iowa's Jack Skudlarcyzk 10-6.

Anthony Mantanona (174) picked up a first-round win, defeating West Virginia's James Wujeck in just 45 seconds before he was eliminated in consolation.

The five Sooners still competing will be back in action for Sunday's third session starting at noon. The finals are set to begin at 6 p.m. CT and will broadcast live on FOX Sports Oklahoma.
