Demas Fourth at NCAA Championships

PITTSBURGH – Oklahoma wrestler Dom Demas' dazzling debut season culminated in a fourth-place finish at the 2019 NCAA Championships.

The redshirt freshman and No. 9 seed completed his season in the 141 pounds third-place bout, where he was narrowly defeated by Missouri's No. 5 Jaydin Eierman 2-0.

The first two periods went scoreless before Eierman escaped in the third, then was awarded a point for riding time.

Demas advanced to the third-place match by virtue of a 13-9 decision of No. 3 Nick Lee (Penn State). Demas had two takedowns in the first period for a 4-2 advantage once Lee escaped twice. The Sooner started the second on top and Lee escaped again, but Demas quickly took him down for a 6-3 lead. Demas gave up a point for a locked hands penalty, then Lee added an escape to cut Demas' lead to 6-5.

Demas scored a takedown as the second period came to an end to go up 8-5, then started the third on bottom and escaped for 9-5. Lee got his first takedown of the match, but Demas again escaped for an 10-7 advantage. Lee added another takedown to bring up 10-9, but Demas escaped again, then got a takedown of his own to ride out Lee with a 13-9 victory.

The Sooner completes his first NCAA tournament run with a 4-2 record, taking out the No. 24, 8, 20 and 3 seeds in the tournament.

The redshirt freshman finishes his first year of competition with 33 total victories. As one of the final eight wrestlers remaining in his weight class, Demas became OU's 274^th All-American in program history and the first All-American since Cody Brewer in 2016.

The Ohio native captured the Sooners' first Big 12 title since Brewer in 2016 and first at 141 pounds since Kendric Maple in 2014.

Demas and the Sooners will return to the mat in November. A schedule for the 2019-20 season will be released at a later date.
