Five Sooners Advance to Day Two in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS - The No. 18/20/20 Oklahoma Sooners wrestling team tallied 44.5 points and sits in eighth place after the first day of competition at the loaded Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational, advancing five wrestlers to the second day of action at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Anthony Madrigal (133), Dom Demas (141), Justin Thomas (157), Anthony Mantanona (174) and Jake Woodley (197) will compete on the second and final day of the prestigious tournament, which features 16 teams ranked in FloWrestling's top 25. Demas and Woodley each advanced to their respective semifinal bouts, while the other three Sooners will look to advance through the consolation brackets.
At 141 pounds, No. 2/2/2 (Flo/InterMat/Track) Demas pinned CSU Bakersfield's Noah Blakley-Beanes in 2:34 and picked up a 23-7 tech fall (7:00) victory over North Dakota State's Sawyer Degen in the first two rounds.
In the quarterfinals, the redshirt sophomore tallied six first-period points that would be enough to hold off No. 18/18/32 Mitch Moore (Virginia Tech), 6-4. Demas will square off with No. 4/4/5 Mitchell McKee in Saturday's semifinal with a spot in the 141 title bout on the line.
No. 16/16/11 Jake Woodley advanced to the 197-pound quarterfinals with a 9-2 decision over Joseph Correll (Michigan) and a 6-2 injury default (2:51) over Ryan Reyes (Fresno State). Tied at 2-2 heading into the third period of his quarterfinal bout against No. 11/8/16 Tanner Sloan (South Dakota State), Woodley racked up an escape and a takedown to pull off a third-period victory and advance to the semifinals.
Woodley is slated to wrestle No. 19/17/17 Christian Brunner (Purdue) on Saturday for a spot in the final.
At 133 pounds, No. 13/15/14 Anthony Madrigal was defeated by Virginia's No. NR/NR/19 Louie Hayes in a 6-1 decision, but utilized a 16-1 technical fall (4:46), a medical forfeit and a 6-0 decision to advance to the second consolation round of eight to face Virginia Tech's No. 18/NR/21 Collin Gerardi on Saturday.
No. 20/14/17 Justin Thomas (157) shutout Ohio State's Jaden Mattox, 7-0, in the round of 16 after a bye in the tournament's first round. Thomas dropped a tight battle to Iowa State's No. 2/3/2 David Carr, 6-5 in the quarterfinals. The redshirt junior takes on Northern Iowa's Keaton Geerts in Saturday's second consolation round of eight.
After a pair of falls in the first two rounds, No. 14/NR/21 Anthony Mantanona was defeated by No. 7/7/7 Dylan Lydy (Purdue) in their own tight quarterfinals bout, 5-3. Mantanona will look to advance to the consolation semifinals when he faces No. 12/15/11 Brandon Womack (Cornell) on Saturday.
Making his collegiate debut, freshman Sam Dover won his first bout in the 165-pound bracket with a 7-5 decision over Clarion's Michael Bartolo. Dover dropped his next two bouts, both 7-1 decisions, including a match with No. 22/NR/25 Emil Soehnlen (Purdue).
Freshman Darrien Roberts and redshirt freshman Jacob Butler both went 2-2 on the day, each dropping a match to a top-5 opponent. Roberts picked up his first career victory against a ranked opponent, claiming a sudden-victory, 5-3 win over No. 25/NR/25 Tate Samuelson (Wyoming) in the second consolation round of 16.
Redshirt freshman Josiah Jones pinned (2:08) Cal Poly's Sam Aguilar, but dropped close bouts to No. 19/NR/23 John Borst (Virginia Tech) and No. 18/19/22 Brandon Metz. At 125, Christian Moody was eliminated after dropping a pair of decisions.
Saturday's action is set to begin at 11 a.m. (all times CT) with the second consolation round of eight. Semfinals are scheduled to begin at noon, and the championship finals and third-place matches will start at 5 p.m.
