Wrestling Heads West for Cliff Keen Invite

NORMAN — After a two-week break, the Oklahoma wrestling team is back in action this weekend at the competitive Cliff Keen Invitational. The two-day tournament will be held Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev.

The Cliff Keen Invitational features 32 teams from across the nation, with 16 of those ranked in FloWrestling's latest top-25 release and six of those in the top 10: No. 3 Nebraska, No. 4 NC State, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 6 Iowa State, No. 7 Arizona State and No. 8 UNI. The field also consists of more than 100 ranked wrestlers.

Seven other Big 12 squads will also be in competition: Iowa State, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming.

Last Time Out

The last time the Sooners took that mat, they split a pair of duals in Kent, Ohio on Nov. 26. OU topped Kent State, 29-7, but fell to Michigan State, 21-16.

The Sooners took eight of 10 bouts against Kent State while splitting the 10 with Michigan State. Five Sooners won both of their matches on the day: Anthony Madrigal (133), Dom Demas (141), Justin Thomas (157), Anthony Mantanona (174) and Jake Woodley (197).

Demas Dominating

Redshirt Sophomore Dom Demas (141) has led the Sooners with a 9-1 start to the 2019-20 campaign. The 2018-19 Big 12 Champion collected his second consecutive Hammer Award earlier this season, taking home the title at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic.

Demas, ranked No. 2 nationally, enters a stacked 141 bracket at the Cliff Keen Invite that includes eight wrestlers ranked in FloWrestling's top 25 and five All-Americans.

Sooners in the Rankings

Six Sooners are currently ranked by at least one ranking service: No. 2/2/2 (Flo/InterMat/Track) Demas, No. 13/15/14 Madrigal, No. 16/16/11 Woodley, No. 20/14/17 Thomas, No. 14/NR/21 Mantanona and No. NR/NR/29 Christian Moody.

Tournament Info

Competition is slated to begin at 11 a.m. CT on both Friday and Saturday. A full event schedule can be found on the tournament's website, and brackets and results will be available on FloArena. Additionally, FloWrestling will live stream the event for a fee.

Up Next

The Sooners' home opener is set for Sunday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. when OU will host Oklahoma State for the season's first of two Bedlam duals. Tickets for the event can be purchased online or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Office at (405) 325-2424.
