Soccer Season Ends in Big 12 Tournament

November 03, 2019 | Soccer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. The Oklahoma soccer team saw its season come to an end Sunday afternoon in a 2-1 loss to Oklahoma State in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo. The Sooners finished the 2019 season with an 8-9-3 record.

"The day belongs to the seniors and reflecting on the contribution each has made to move the program forward," head coach Matt Potter said. "They carried the cause all season long and were unfortunately on the wrong end of close game with few chances for either team today. While this one will hurt for awhile, we gave ourselves a chance to win it. The players that remain can look forward with optimism and with continued work, will compete on the biggest of stages.  Thankful to have met, worked with and been inspired by so many people (players, staff and peers) alike."

With a 3-5-1 record in league action, the Sooners earned the No. 8 seed, setting up a rematch with Oklahoma State just two weeks after the teams met in Stillwater, Okla. OU and OSU also met in the 2017 Big 12 Championship quarterfinals, with the Cowgirls earning a 2-1 win.

This was the third meeting between the teams this year with the squads playing to a 2-2 draw on Aug. 29 in Norman and the Sooners falling, 3-1, on Oct. 25 in Stillwater.

OU took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to sophomore Erika Middleton's first career goal in the 41st minute. Off a low corner from sophomore Megan Reilly, Middleton found open space to slot the ball just inside the far post out of the reach of the diving OSU keeper.

The first half goal was only the third allowed by Oklahoma State this season. Penn State and Kansas State were the only other two teams in 2019 to score on the Cowgirls in the opening 45 minutes of play.

Oklahoma State would tie the game in the 57th minute off the foot of Gabrielle Coleman. Coleman fired from the top of the six-yard box, sending the ball inside the far post.

The Cowgirls took the lead in the 81st minute on a goal from Jaci Jones. OSU earned a corner kick, and, on the clearance, Jones took a shot from the top of the 18-yard box sending the ball inside the far post to give OSU the 2-1 lead.

With the minutes winding down, the Sooners fired off multiple shots, but couldn't find the equalizer to send the game to overtime.

Oklahoma narrowly outshot OSU, 9-7, while the Cowgirls held the 4-3 shot on goal advantage. Both keepers recorded two saves on the day as Nikki Panas took the loss and finished the season 4-6-1 in goal.
