OU Begins Season at Michigan State Open

November 01, 2019 | Wrestling

NORMAN — The No. 18/21 Oklahoma wrestling team kicks off the 2019-20 season on Saturday at the Michigan State Open. Fifteen Sooners will compete in the open tournament that takes place at Jenison Fieldhouse in East Lansing, Mich.

Among the 15 Sooners making their season debuts, five enter the season ranked in FloWrestling's preseason release: Dom Demas at No. 1 at 141, No. 13 Justin Thomas at 157, No. 17 Jake Woodley at 197, No. 19 Christian Moody at 125 and No. 25 Anthony Mantanona at 174.

Demas, a redshirt sophomore, heads into the season ranked No. 1 at 141 in multiple polls, including FloWrestling, Trackwrestling, Intermat and WIN Magazine. He looks to defend his 2018-19 Big 12 title after becoming Oklahoma's 274th All-American wrestler in 2018-19.

Redshirt freshmen Tommy Hoskins (125), Zackery Zeamer (149), Jacob Butler (149), Jose Lao Cooper (165) and Josiah Jones (HWT) will all make their debut in the Crimson and Cream at the tournament.

The Sooners collected nine top-five finishes at last year's MSU Open, including a title at 197 pounds from Woodley. Demas and Mantanona each took fourth place in their respective classes, while Thomas took fifth and Boyd took sixth in their own classes. McCoy claimed his first collegiate win at last year's edition of the tournament.

Demas, Thomas, Moody and Woodley all head into the season looking to return to the NCAA Wrestling Championships in March after qualifying last season, while the rest of the Sooners look to earn their first NCAA appearances.
