NORMAN – The Oklahoma soccer team fell in a heartbreaking double overtime loss to Texas, 3-2, Thursday night at John Crain Field in the final game of the regular season.
With the loss, the Sooners (8-8-3, 3-5-1) will be the No. 8 seed in the Big 12 tournament, facing No. 1 Oklahoma State in the first round. The two teams have met twice this season playing to a 2-2 draw on Aug. 29 and a 3-1 OSU win on Oct. 25.
Prior to the game, the Sooners honored the 2019 senior class of
Kaylee Dao,
Kristina O'Donnell and
Ivanna Rivas.
"Without a doubt, our seniors put everything out there," head coach
Matt Potter said. "You feel for them because they did everything but win the game. That's what they've done all year; they led the way and showed the energy, enthusiasm and passion to play and I am very proud of them for that. On a different day, the game belongs to us but sometimes it doesn't bounce your way and today was one of those days."
Texas found the game winning goal in the 108
th minute off the foot of Cameron Brooks. For her second goal of the season, Brooks received the ball from Carlee Allen and slotted the ball into the back of the net from nine yards out.
The Sooners overcame a 2-1 deficit that forced them into their program record 10th overtime game of the year. OU is now 4-3-3 in overtime games this season.
The Sooners got on the board in the fifth minute with a goal by
Maya McCutcheon, her third score of the season. Dao passed the ball to junior
Yuuka Kurosaki, who slotted the ball inside to McCutcheon to give OU the 1-0 lead.
The Longhorns would tie the game in the 21
st minute with a goal by Cyera Hintzen. The tie wouldn't last long, with only five minutes left in the first half, Texas scored again and took the lead with a goal by Sydney Nobles.
Jazzy Richards tied the game in the 69
th minute with her first career goal. Richards' took a shot from the top of the box, firing the ball past the Texas keeper to make it a 2-2 game.

nd minute,
Jazzy Richards had a chance to win the game, but her attempt was saved by the Longhorn's goalkeeper, sending the game into double overtime. In the 105
th minute senior
Kaylee Dao fired a shot that went just wide.
"I thought I had it," Dao said. "Honestly, the keeper made a fantastic save. I need to put those chances in the back of the net regardless."
The Big 12 Championship will kick off on Sunday, Nov. 3, at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo. The Sooners and Cowgirls will be the first game of the day at 11:30 a.m. CT.
