Sooners Top Savage Storm in Tune Up
October 29, 2019 | Men's Basketball
NORMAN — The Oklahoma men's basketball team tipped off the 2019-20 season inside Lloyd Noble Center on Tuesday with an 89-76 exhibition win over Southeastern Oklahoma State.
OU's tune-up exhibition provied head coach Lon Kruger an opportunity to see plenty of lineup combinations as eight Sooners played at least 12 minutes.
"It was good to play someone that wasn't ourselves," said Kruger. "We did a lot of things well, a lot of things we've got to do better. It was great to get things started and get some things on video and learn from it. The guys did a good job, they played for each other and had a few good stretches in the ball game, and hope to have more of the good stretches and less of the poor stretches, so we'll learn a lot from it."
Junior Brady Manek led all scorers with 23 points and eight rebounds. His performance was especially meaningful coming against his older brother Kellen, who produced 12 points and eight boards for the Savage Storm.
"It was pretty cool," said Manek. "They (Southeastern) are a really good team, just having that brotherly competition we have out there, it was a lot of fun. It was really good for our family, our friends. He's just a really good basketball player, all in all, he does what he does well."
The OU newcomers impressed in their debut with De'Vion Harmon contributing 22 points and three assists, Jalen Hill chipping in 11 points and Austin Reaves and Victor Iwuakor scoring 10 a piece.
OU shot the ball well in their first action of the season, shooting 47% from the field. The Sooners got 23 points from their bench and forced the Savage Storm into 13 turnovers, resulting in 18 points. OU outscored Southeastern in fast break points by a margin of 30-5.
The Sooners will host their season opener Nov. 5 against UTSA at 7 p.m. inside Lloyd Noble Center. Tickets start at just $10. The game will be broadcast on SoonerSports.TV.
