October 20, 2019 | Soccer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Oklahoma soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to West Virginia Sunday afternoon in Morgantown, W.Va.
OU dropped to 8-6-3 on the season and 3-3-1 in Big 12 play, while the Mountaineers improved to 8-6-1, 3-3-0.
"Undoubtedly one of the toughest places to come play," head coach Matt Potter said. "Although the wrong side of a 1-0 game, we can look forward with optimism based on the team's performance today. The game was certainly competitive and although we showed glimpses of our quality we needed to be a little sharper in our decision making. We certainly responded to the goal by taking the game to our opponent, carving out some second-half chances and on a different day we finish. We will make the travel home then look forward to preparing for Bedlam."
The two teams got off to a slow start as they headed into halftime locked in a scoreless battle. The teams combined for just eight shots in the first 45 minutes of play, each tallying four.
The Sooners best look in the first half came as they earned a free kick deep in their attacking third. Sophomore Megan Reilly played in a beautiful pass, but Dao's header would go just wide of the net.
In the 54th minute, West Virginia took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Alin Stahl. Jade Gentile would play the ball across the box, finding Stahl who sent in a shot from 12-yards out.
In the 63rd minute, Dao almost had the equalizer as she launched a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. The shot attempt just missed going inside the far post as it sailed wide of the net.
Dao would have another scoring opportunity in the 75th minute as she battled past the Mountaineer defense, firing a shot right into the hands of the WVU keeper. In the 79th minute, freshman Jordan Lund sent in a shot from the top of the 18, but the ball skimmed over the crossbar.
The Mountaineers outshot the Sooners 13-9 on the night, including a 5-2 shot on goal advantage. Dao led the Sooners with three shots on the day, while Reilly, Lund and sophomore Erika Yost each notched a pair.
The Sooners will wrap up their road schedule with the second edition of Bedlam on Friday, Oct. 25. OU and Oklahoma State will face off at 7 p.m. CT in Stillwater, Okla. The two teams played to a 2-2 draw in the non-conference Bedlam game on Aug. 29 in Norman.
