NORMAN – The Oklahoma wrestling team returns to the mat this weekend for an Iowa road swing. The Sooners will face No. 15 Iowa State Friday at 7 p.m. CT before a meeting with No. 16 Northern Iowa Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Sooners last competed at the Virginia Duals, where they recorded a third place finish.
OU racked up three wins at the tournament, including two upsets of ranked teams. The Sooners fell to then-No. 9/9/16/16 (Flo/Trackwrestling/ InterMat/NWCA) Arizona State 22-12 before bouncing back in consolation to defeat No. 20/14 (NWCA/Intermat) Lock Haven 23-12. OU bested Old Dominion 27-14 to earn a spot in the third place match.
There, OU took avenged its earlier loss to Arizona State with a 21-19 victory over the defending champion-Sundevils.
In the third place match, OU trailed 20-18 when heavyweight Jake Boyd took the mat against Arizona State's Brady Daniel in the final bout. The bout went scoreless through one period before Boyd got on the board with an escape, then was awarded a penalty point for a 2-0 lead. Daniel got an escape in the third to trim Boyd's lead to 2-1, but the Sooner answered with a takedown to win it 4-1.
At 141, Dom Demas is the Sooners' representative in the InterMat and FloWrestling rankings, checking in at No. 11 in the InterMat rankings and No. 10 in Flo's release.
In Trackwrestling's rankings, Demas is also No. 11, while Jake Woodley is No. 24 at 197.
In his last five matches, redshirt sophomore Anthony Mantanona has recorded three pins, including back-to-back wins by fall against West Virginia and Pitt. All of those victories came in under two minutes. Mantanona's most recent pin was against No. 20 Seldon Wright of Old Dominion, when the unranked Sooner defeated Wright in just 1:44.
OU's Jake Woodley competed in the Roger Denker Open, where he took the 197 pounds title. The redshirt freshman dominated the tournament, winning his first match by fall before recording back-to-back major decision victories (18-6 and 19-5) to capture the crown.
