Sooners Draw Zags to Close Out Weekend

NORMAN – The Oklahoma soccer team wrapped up its two-game weekend with a 1-1 draw against Gonzaga Sunday afternoon at John Crain Field.
Junior Ivanna Rivas scored the lone goal of the day for the Sooners, her second of the year, in the 88th minute to draw even with Gonzaga and send the game to overtime. Junior Kristina O'Donnell sent a deep pass to Rivas inside the 18-yard box, allowing Rivas to find the back of the net from 12 yards out.
“I felt really good,” Rivas said. “We were just fighting the whole time; our team just doesn't give up. It felt amazing scoring. It was good that we came back and fought for a tie; we were defending our home. It was good that we pulled out a tie, but we were trying to go for that win.”
The Zags took the lead in the 80th minute as Maggie Connors found the back of the net on a cross just inside the far post.
The Sooners had the best opportunity of the first half to break the scoreless tie in the 38th minute. Senior Emily Parker went one-on-one with the Zags keeper from six yards out but had her shot attempt blocked. On the ensuing corner kick from the blocked shot, Kaylee Dao had a perfect shot on goal saved.
In the 79th minute, sophomore Erika Yost sent a shot just inches over the cross bar on an attempt from 18 yards out.
The Sooners were outshot 18-14 on the day. McMahand led all OU players with four shots, followed by three shots from Yost. Rivas and freshman Megan Reilly each tallied a pair.
Sophomore goalkeeper McKinley Crone made eight saves on the night, including two in overtime. The eight saves are a season high for Crone and just two off her career high.
The Sooners will travel to College Station, Texas to take on Texas A&M Friday, Aug. 31, at 8 p.m. CT. The game will air on the SEC Network.
