NORMAN — The Oklahoma wrestling team begins the 2018-19 season on Saturday at the Michigan State Open. The open tournament will take place at Jenison Fieldhouse in East Lansing, Mich.
The tournament field includes wrestlers from 21 schools, including four USA Today/NWCA preseason top-25 teams in No. 2 Ohio State; No. 5 Michigan; No. 17 Northwestern; and No. 18 Purdue.
Among the 15 Sooners to compete at the Michigan State Open, two enter the season ranked in FloWrestling's preseason release: redshirt sophomore Justin Thomas is No. 15 at 157 and redshirt freshman Jake Woodley is No.14 at 197 pounds.
Two more OU wrestlers made WIN magazine's top 20 in their respective weight classes: senior Davion Jeffries clocks in at No. 19 at 149 pounds; and graduate transfer Kayne MacCallum is No. 20 in the 184 pounds division.
Freshman Anthony Madrigal (133) and redshirt freshmen Dom Demas (141), Anthony Mantanona (174), Jake Boyd (285), Eli Boulton (285), Collin McCoy (285) and Woodley (285) will all make their debut in the Crimson and Cream at the tournament.
Demas and Mantanona bring international experience to the table as both Sooners made US Junior World Teams over the summer. Demas represented the nation and Oklahoma at the World Championships held in Trnava, Slovakia, and Mantanona captured a gold medal in the 79 kg division of the Freestyle event and the bronze in the Greco-Roman's 77 kg division.
