Incoming JUCO transfer Ty Lazenby is embracing the challenge. Making it from a small town in northern Oklahoma to the state's premier basketball program by way of two years in junior college, the 6-5 guard is grateful for where his hard work has taken him to.

“It was a surreal feeling – coming from a Class A school, not having a single Division I offer out of high school,” said Lazenby. “It was weird because I always feel like I'd made it, but whenever I put it (the OU uniform) on I feel like the work has just now started.”

Lazenby came to Norman after two seasons at Northern Oklahoma College Enid. In 2016-17, the guard averaged 22.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting .451 from the field, .359 from 3-point range and .864 from the foul line.

His 22.9 points per game ranked sixth in the National Junior College Athletic Association. He scored at least 20 points in 20 of his 29 games, including seven performances of at least 30 points. His outstanding sophomore season was recognized nationally when he was named an NJCAA first-team All-American – the first in NOC's program history.

Not only did Lazenby's time at NOC Enid help attract the eyes of OU head coach Lon Kruger, but it also forced him to develop his game to match the college competition.

“It definitely prepared me,” said Lazenby. “As far as the speed and the toughness, it's definitely helped me out a lot. I already knew before I came in here that this is another level and another speed of the game. Adjusting to it has been tough, but I'm getting the hang of it.”

Now at OU, Lazenby will wear his new colors with pride, representing the state he's always called home.

“Being from Oklahoma, being at Oklahoma is the best basketball program in the state,” he said. “It's top of the line and the place you want to be if you're playing basketball.”

His first few months on campus have already been productive, being able to mesh with the veteran Sooners and fellow newcomers through summer practices in preparation for OU's trip overseas to New Zealand and Australian.

“I think we're all starting to buy in and get a feel for each other,” said Lazenby. “Coming down the stretch to the foreign tour, it's starting to mold together nicely.”
