NORMAN — With time running out in regulation and in overtime, the Oklahoma soccer team responded with a pair of goals to prevail with a 2-1 overtime win over the Texas Longhorns on Sunday afternoon at John Crain Field.
The Sooners (9-2-1 overall, 2-0-0 Big 12) trailed for 78 minutes of the contest before junior midfielder Rasha Roberts recorded the equalizer in the 86th minute to force overtime. With just 29 seconds remaining in the first overtime frame, junior midfielder Lizzie Luallin tallied the golden goal to secure the OU victory.
The come-from-behind victory extended OU's win streak to seven matches, the second longest in program history behind just a nine-match stretch in 2005.
“I think we talked about becoming more like ourselves,” fifth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said of the team's halftime adjustments. “I don't think we played well today. I don't want to take anything away from Texas. They got in their rhythm early and seemed to find the game a little bit quicker than us. We've got to figure that out, obviously. Second half, I thought we kept grinding away, grinding away, and that reward happened toward the end with a fantastic finish from Rasha. That kind of turned the game around a little bit in our favor again.”
The Longhorns (6-4-1 overall, 0-1-1 Big 12) got on the board first in the ninth minute as freshman forward Cyera Hintzen scored her second goal of the season. OU tried to clear the initial Texas opportunity, but it deflected off a Sooner defender to the foot of Hintzen and into the back of the net.
OU's equalizer came from Roberts off an assist from junior defender Madeline Brem, whose one-touch pass found the junior at the top of the 18-yard box. It was Roberts' first score and Brem's first assist of the season. The game winner came off a give-and-go pass from senior forward Liz Keester on the left wing, as her through ball found an open Luallin for the winner.
Of the Sooners' 23 goals scored this season, 19 have now come in the second half or overtime.
“I do believe there's a certain attitude to this group that they don't know when they're done,” Potter explained. “I think there's a great spirit in that sense, and so that's a great quality to have. The defining moment today being the goal. A wonderful pass by Tori Bowman to find Liz Keester, Liz a quality pass to find Lizzie and a great run and what a calm, composed finish. It was a great team goal.”
The Sooners were aggressive throughout the match, finishing with a season-high 23 shots, seven of which were on goal, while the Longhorns tallied 15 shots and eight on goal. Nine players got off shots for the Sooners, led by midfielder/forward Madison Saliba and Roberts with five, while senior defender Rachel Ressler added three.
Redshirt senior Kassidie Stade, who corralled seven saves on Sunday, improved to 9-2-1 this season in goal for the Sooners. Senior Paige Brown finished with five saves for the Longhorns.
Up next, OU continues Big 12 play on the road when it takes on Iowa State at 7 p.m. CT on Friday in Ames, Iowa, before facing No. 5 West Virginia at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday in Morgantown, W.Va. This season, the Sooners are celebrating 20 years of their program, which began in 1996.
