CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — In its first road contest of the season, the Oklahoma soccer team fell to No. 3 Virginia, 3-0, Friday night inside Klöckner Stadium.
The Sooners (2-2-1 overall) were unable to find the back of the net against a stout Virginia defense that has not allowed a goal in eight matches dating back to the 2015 season. Opponents have not scored on the Cavaliers (5-0-0 overall) in 782 minutes.
OU generated a total of eight shots in the contest, half of which were on goal. Senior forward Liz Keester and sophomore forward Emily Parker both tallied a pair, and Parker forced saves by Virginia senior goalkeeper Morgan Stearns with both of hers.
Senior midfielder/forward Madison Saliba, senior midfielder Shiloh Price, junior midfielder Lizzie Luallin and sophomore defender Angela Boyle added a shot each for the Sooners.
OU limited the Cavaliers to a season-low 13 shots, their previous being 21, and the Sooners' eight shots were the most allowed by UVA so far in 2016.
"These are the environements we want to compete in," fifth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said. "We had moments that spoke to our potential and moments to learn from. Virginia is one of the programs that sets the standard for all of us, and when needed, they showed why they are in that class. We regroup and look forward to a new day Sunday."
The Cavaliers got on the board in the ninth minute as junior forward Veronica Latsko tallied a goal off an assist from senior defender/midfielder Tina Iordanou. Less than two minutes later, they added their second goal, this one from senior midfielder Alexis Shaffer from junior defender/forward Megan Reid. The third score came via an own goal off a cross in the 86th minute.
In a full game in goal, senior Kassidie Stade grabbed a pair of saves for the Sooners, and UVA's Stearns finished with four. Against ranked opponents, the Sooners are now 1-1-1 on the season.
The Sooners close the weekend with a contest at George Mason, slated for 11:30 a.m. CT on Sunday in Fairfax, Va. The match will stream live on Atlantic10.com. These two matches are the first of six straight away from home for OU. This season, the Sooners are celebrating 20 years of their program, which began in 1996.
