NORMAN — By a score of 1-0, the Oklahoma soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Utah Valley on Sunday afternoon at John Crain Field.

Fifth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said the Wolverines played well against his squad, but the Sooners will use the match as an opportunity to grow.

“I don't think we can discredit Utah Valley today. They worked extremely hard, they found a way to go up a goal, and they played very, very well. I'm not so sure it was as much to do with us as the fact that they played well,” Potter said. “I thought we were quite flat today, obviously. We had our chances. We still had chances, clear-cut chances, not dissimilar to the ones that they created, and they happened to put theirs away and we didn't. Sometimes, it just bounces that way. We'll just regroup and go again.”

The Wolverines scored the game's lone goal in the 16th minute. After OU redshirt senior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade left her line to clear the ball, UVU's Taylor Kirk maneuvered around the diving Stade to set up a path to the net.

Throughout the second half, the Sooners had solid chances but could not quite connect.

In the 37th minute, sophomore Emily Parker took a great look from outside of the Wolverine's goal box toward the far corner of the net. However, UVU's keeper Brooklyn Nielsen barely got a hand on the shot to knock the ball into the post and prevent the equalizer.

With just over nine minutes remaining in the match, seniors Rachel Ressler and Shiloh Price faced Nielsen two-on-one at the six-yard line, but Ressler's attempt to reach the open Price narrowly missed her teammate's foot and rolled out of bounds.

At the 87-minute mark, Ressler tapped in a score that was negated by a close offside call.

The two teams finished nearly identical in shots, with OU edging Utah Valley by a 12-11 mark. In the first half, the Sooners got off just four shots by responding with more pressure in the second, registering eight in the frame.

The loss broke an 11-match home unbeaten streak for the Sooners, during which they posted an 8-0-3 record. OU's last loss at John Crain Field came on Nov. 14, 2014, against Arkansas in the NCAA Tournament.

“We've got more new learning and that new learning is giving us a platform now that we've got to discover ourselves real quickly in these types of battles," Potter said. "We've got a long road trip coming up, but we look forward to those challenges. There's nothing for us to fear. We've got plenty of talent, and we've just got to basically learn from this. The season is no different.”

The Sooners hit the road for the first time this season next weekend, starting with a contest at No. 4 Virginia on Friday night. This season, the Sooners are celebrating 20 years of their program, which began in 1996.
