July 27, 2016 | Men's Golf
NORMAN – Oklahoma redshirt freshman Quade Cummins took the title at the Oklahoma Amateur Championship, played at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Wednesday.
Cummins won 2-up in the championship match to defeat Tate Williamson, a rising senior at Northeastern State University. The two went back and forth on the first four holes before Cummins pulled ahead with a birdie on hole No. 5. While Williamson fought to regain the lead, Cummins played consistently, shooting every hole on the back nine at or below par, to take the match.
“Anytime a guy can win his state amateur championship, it is a big deal, and I am excited for Quade and his accomplishment this week,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “He has been working really hard, and he is starting to see his results from his work.”
The Weatherford, Okla., native was seeded No. 3 in the match play bracket after tying for first with a 66 (-5) in the stroke play qualifier, held on July 15 at the Lincoln Park Golf Course in Oklahoma City. This qualifier was the second of two, the first taking place July 13 at the Page Blecher Golf Course in Tulsa, Okla.
Match play competition began Monday with the round of 64 and continued with two rounds each day. Cummins competed well throughout the week to advance through the bracket, including a strong showing in the semifinal round Wednesday morning, winning 4 and 3 to advance to the championship.
