NORMAN – OU head wrestling coach Mark Cody announced the approval and beginning of a 60-day renovation project to update the team's locker room, which is slated to be complete in mid-June.
“Our guys spend so much of their time in the facility and locker room,” OU head coach Mark Cody said. “They're in there weekends and sometimes they come in on their own, and we want to make the facility as comfortable for them as possible. We want it to really be something they can be proud of.”
The renovation includes a new sound system throughout the entire wrestling facility as well as new ceilings and updated lighting. New flooring and shower fixtures are also part of the project. The most prominent change in the facility will be the addition of 33 new wood lockers, paid for by friends of the wrestling program.
“What's amazing to me is the way the friends of our program have stepped up monetarily as we've been fundraising for the new lockers,” Cody said. “We have a lot of support in this program that has really been good to us over the years, and it's just amazing that as we made those phone calls to fundraise, these people were right there ready to step up and do what they needed to do to help out. That's huge for our program and for the friends of our program to be so positive and believe in this team and believe in our staff and what we're trying to accomplish.”
The project comes after an exciting 2015-16 season that saw departing senior Cody Brewer and sophomore Ryan Millhof both earn Big 12 individual championships and NCAA All-America status. Oklahoma finished the national tournament in New York City in 13th-place. The Sooners will return nine starters from last season to the 2016-17 squad.
“We had some pretty good success this year, and I think that is another reason that people have stepped up because they see what we've done so far, and projects like this can only help out in recruiting and student-athlete experience,” Cody continued. “I think our guys are really excited, and it's cool for them to be pioneers for this new renovation. We're able to do things like this because of their success.”
