NORMAN, Okla. – For the second time in the series, the University of Oklahoma baseball team walked off a winner with a 7-6 decision over Baylor at L. Dale Mitchell Park on Sunday afternoon. The Sooners got an 11th-inning rally going with back-to-back, two-out singles that set up the game-winning hit from junior Jack Flansburg (Orange, Calif.). Oklahoma improved to 17-15-1 overall and 4-5 in the Big 12 with the win, while the Bears dropped to 16-16 and 4-5.
In a game that featured eight home runs, hour per side, the deciding run came on a string of three-consecutive singles. Freshman third baseman Cade Harris (Leona, Texas) got it started with a single to right and junior center fielder Ben Hollas (Longview, Texas) followed with a single to left. Flansburg then picked up his first hit of the day to provide the Sooners' their second walk-off of the weekend and fourth of the season.
“I had a lot of confidence in our guys offensively and just knew that in the bullpen, we had the match up in our favor,” said head coach Pete Hughes. “Super offensive day with the wind, but Baylor swung the bats like crazy, too. It was good team win.”
Just as it did in Friday night's win, Oklahoma never led until the final run touched home. Baylor got leadoff-home runs from catcher Matt Menard and left fielder Kameron Esthay in the second and third innings to chase OU junior right-hander Jake Elliott (Coppell, Texas). The Sooners later pulled even when senior left fielder Hunter Haley (Nacogdoches, Texas) went deep to right in the fourth for a two-run shot after freshman designated hitter Chris Andritsos (The Woodlands, Texas) tripled into the gap in left-center.
“I love guys that don't scoreboard-watch,” continued Hughes. “I don't know if we're too young to know what's going on or they just believe in themselves and I would prefer the latter.”
Haley went 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI. He also provided a critical diving catch in left to rob extra bases at the start of the 11th inning.
“That kid's been battling,” Hughes said of Haley. “This game will eat you alive mentally, especially if you have high expectations and that's where he's been mentally. The only kid who's been to a Super Regional in this program and I've sat him. He's played a lot of baseball and he's been a team-first guy the whole way, which allows him to perform when he plays.”
Beginning in the top of the fifth, Baylor would score a single run in four consecutive innings, including two solo home runs from right fielder Darryn Sheppard. The Sooners countered with a leadoff-homer from junior first baseman Austin O'Brien (Owasso, Okla.) and Haley's second in the sixth. Harris would then tie the game, 5-5, in the seventh with a leadoff-home run to right.
Trailing 6-5 in the eighth, senior right fielder Alex Wise (Neosho, Mo.) placed a leadoff-double in to right, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice-fly to center by Haley. Wise finished the game 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles.
Oklahoma pitchers were helped out by steady play on the infield. The Sooners turned four double plays in the game; all of the 5-4-3 variety, including to end the top of both the 10th and 11th inning.
Junior Sheldon Neuse (Fort Worth, Texas) started at shortstop and finished the game pitching for OU. Neuse (3-1) won both games for the Sooners this weekend. He pitched a career-high 4.1 innings of relief, gave up two runs on five hits and struck out one. Elliott gave Oklahoma two-plus innings and surrendered two runs on six hits.
For the Bears, right-hander Kyle Hill went 5.1 innings in the start. He allowed three runs on seven hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Right-hander Andrew McInvale (2-2) took the loss in a 4.1-inning relief effort. He gave up two runs on five hits and struck out two.
The Sooners hit the road next week beginning with a Tuesday night game at Wichita State before visiting TCU for a weekend series.
