WICHITA, Kan. – A three-run first and eight-run third decided the game early as the University of Oklahoma baseball team rolled past Wichita State, 15-7, at Eck Stadium on Tuesday night. The Sooners, who have won seven of their last nine, improved to 18-15-1 overall, while the Shockers dropped to 11-22.
Senior left fielder Hunter Haley (Nacogdoches, Texas) powered the OU lineup with a five-RBI night. He finished the night 3-for-5 with two doubles as he drove in runs in each of his first three at-bats. Junior first baseman Austin O'Brien (Owasso, Okla.) added a 3-for-5 effort with three runs and a double as Oklahoma outhit Wichita State, 15-11.
The Sooners got the scoring started in the top of the first with a two-out rally. OU took advantage of a pair of two-out walks as O'Brien lifted a ground-rule double over the center fielder's head to plate the first run of the night. Haley followed with a two-run single to right.
In the third, Oklahoma sent 12 to the plate and scored eight times on five hits and cashed in on two WSU errors. O'Brien led off with a single through the left side and scored on a Haley double lifted deep down the left field line. The Sooners added big knocks on a two-run single by junior second baseman Jack Flansburg (Orange, Calif.) and Haley's second double of the frame; a two-run knock down the right field line.
OU followed with its second three-run inning of the night in the fourth. Junior designated hitter Cody Thomas (Colleyville, Texas) led off with a home run to dead-center for his third of the year. The Sooners then got a RBI-double from freshman center fielder Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas) and a RBI-single from Flansburg, who went reached four times and drove in three on a 2-for-3 night.
Freshman right-hander Jake Irvin (Bloomington, Minn.) got the win despite pitching just three innings in the start. Irvin (2-0) scattered two hits and a walk to go with two strikeouts in three-scoreless frames. Right-hander Connor Lungwitz (2-1) surrendered five runs on five hits and three walks in two-plus innings of work.
The Shockers showed life in the bottom of the fifth with six runs on five hits and an error. Shortstop Jordan Boyer brought in Wichita State's first two runs with a two-run triple to left-center. He went 3-4 at the plate out of the nine-hole.
Oklahoma returns to action with a road, Big 12 series at TCU beginning Friday night. The game will be televised nationally on FS1 at 7:00 pm.
