Three Sooners Qualify for Finals at Big 12s

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Three Sooners are headed to the finals of the Big 12 Championship after two impressive sessions on Saturday. The tournament is being held inside the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo.
OU currently sits in third place in the team standings with 70.5 points. Oklahoma State tops the leaderboard with 140.5 points and Iowa State holds a 1.5-point advantage over the Sooners with 72 points.
Sophomore Ryan Millhof, redshirt senior Cody Brewer and freshman Davion Jeffries will all make appearances in Sunday afternoon's championship round and have each punched their ticket to the NCAA Championships in New York City on March 17-19.
Millhof was the first Sooner to secure his place in the finals with a 10-5 decision over NDSU's No. 5 Josh Rodriguez. Millhof, who will face OSU's Eddie Klimara in Sunday's finals, took early control of the match, leading 6-0 after the first period. He tallied three more escapes and earned a stalling point and the riding-time point for the 5-point win.
In the quarterfinals, Millhof's first points came in an escape in the second period. The sophomore went on to tally two takedowns and secure the riding-time point for a 6-2 decision over No. 9 Drew Romero of Air Force.
At 133 pounds, Brewer earned a spot in tomorrow's finals match with an impressive 20-2 technical fall over No. 4 Jade Rauser of Utah Valley. The redshirt senior led 8-1 after the opening frame and extended his lead to 11-1 after two, tallying a takedown and an escape. Brewer continued his dominance with two takedowns and a 4-point nearfall in the third for the technical fall in 6:08. Brewer will wrestle against Iowa State's Earl Hall in tomorrow's finals bout.
In session I's quarterfinal bout, Brewer downed WVU's Keegan Moore by 14-5 major decision. Brewer jumped out to a 4-1 start, but Moore narrowed his lead to 6-5 after two periods. Brewer took control in the third, posting a takedown, four nearfall points and the riding-time point for the major decision.
In the 149-pound semifinals, Jeffries avenged a loss in the Sooners' final regular season contest to South Dakota State's Alex Kocer with a win by fall in 4:47. The freshman, who will take on Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State in the finals match tomorrow, jumped out to a 3-2 lead after one period and led 6-2 at the time of the pin.
Jeffries downed NDSU's Clay Ream, the No. 6 seed, 7-3, in the 149-pound quarterfinals. He secured a takedown, a 2-point nearfall, a reversal and riding time en route to the win.
Iowa State's Tanner Weatherman downed redshirt junior Clark Glass by 5-1 decision in the 165-pound semifinals and will take on Luke Zilverberg of South Dakota State in session III in the consolation semifinals. In session I, Glass shut out Northern Colorado's No. 6 Keilan Torres, 4-0, in the quarterfinal bout. Glass recorded an early takedown in the first to jump out to a 2-0 lead. He escaped to begin the second and registered the riding-time point in the contest.
At 174 pounds, No. 2 Matt Reed dropped a 3-1 decision in SV1 to Iowa State's Lelund Weatherspoon. In the quarterfinals, Reed posted a win by fall over No. 7 Adam Jackson of Air Force in 3:26. Reed led 9-0 by way of two takedowns, an escape and a 4-point nearfall. Reed will face Utah Valley's Ross Taylor in the consolation semis on Sunday morning.
No. 3 Tanner Harms of Wyoming defeated No. 2 Ross Larson in Saturday night's semifinals and will wrestle Ben Tynan of North Dakota State in tomorrow morning's consolation semifinals. In the quarterfinal bout, Larson defeated No. 7 Marcus Malecek of Air Force by 12-0 major decision. Larson started out hot, leading 6-0 at the end of the opening frame. After gaining two stalling points in the second, the redshirt junior tallied a reversal, a stall point and the riding-time point for the bonus-point win.
No. 6 Trae Blackwell dropped his quarterfinal match to No. 3 Seth Gross, 10-0, on Saturday morning, but fought back in the consolation round of four for a 6-2 decision over Air Force's Dylan Hyder, seeded No. 10. He will face Mitch Bengston of North Dakota State in tomorrow's consolation semifinals.
Sophomores Andrew Dixon (184 pounds) and Brock Wingbermuehle (157 pounds) and redshirt junior Brad Johnson (197 pounds) were each eliminated in Saturday's second session.
Wingbermuehle dropped an 8-2 decision to No. 7 Zach Stepan of Air Force in his preliminary match before losing by 5-2 decision to No. 9 Kyle Gliva of NDSU in the consolation round of eight No. 2. WVU's Bubba Scheffel downed Dixon, 3-2 , in the quarterfinals before SDSU's Brady Ayers defeated him, 5-2, in the consolation quarterfinals.
Johnson dropped an 8-5 decision to Iowa State's Pat Downey in the preliminary round, but bounced back with a 4-2 win over Wyoming's Brandon Tribble in the consolation round of eight No. 2. Johnson was eliminated by Utah Valley's Derek Thomas, who won 3-2.
The Sooners will return to the mat at 9 a.m. CT tomorrow for session III of the Big 12 Championship before competing in the finals bouts at 1 p.m.
