Reedy Takes Field on Day Two of Relays

Reedy Takes Field on Day Two of Relays

March 31, 2016 | Track and Field

AUSTIN, Texas - The Sooners had a field day on Thursday, literally.

Highlighted by Julia Reedy's meet title in the hammer throw, the Oklahoma track and field teams concluded the second day at the 89th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays competing in four field events and finishing off the heptathlon.

Reedy earned her second meet title in as many competitions of the 2016 outdoor season. Reedy won the contest on her first and best throw of the day – a mark of 202-5.00. At one point during the competition, that throw was nearly 20 feet farther than the next best mark. She concluded the event as the only entry to finish with a throw of at least 200 feet.

“The Texas Relays is a prestigious meet and to walk away with the Texas Relays' watch is a big deal,” said head coach Jim VanHootegem. “I don't think she felt particularly sharp, but she's at the level now that she can go out and get things done even if she isn't having her best day.”

Sarah Tolson (182-10.00) and Ashley Bryant (180-9.00) also participated in the hammer throw and finished 10th and 12th, respectively.

Sophomore Makayla Stephens wrapped up her first heptathlon of the season, tallying 4,886 points across the seven-event competition. She finished 22nd overall to maintain her position from Wednesday, but was unable to produce a PR in any of the final three events on Thursday. She recorded a 17-11.75 in the long jump, threw a 94-3.00 in the javelin and ran 2:33.63 in the 800 meter.

“You hope that it's a learning experience because the results weren't very good,” VanHootegem said. “I think there were some things she did that you could tell she wasn't far off from a strong performance, but there were other things we identified that we need to work on before her next heptathlon.”

Tanner Williams gets a PR in the pole vault after clearing 17-1.0 - his second PR in as many competitions.

On the men's side, Tanner Williams' pole vault performance was marked by a 17-1.00 personal-best effort to conclude the day for the Sooners. Williams has posted back-to-back PR performances this outdoor season, earning his first (17-0.75) at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., to open his final season with the Sooners.

“I was really pleased with Tanner's efforts and he continues to show growth even as a senior,” the head coach said.

Sooner throwers Charles Nguyen and T.J. Noonan competed in the hammer and javelin, respectively. Nguyen was unable to advance to the final round after posting a 184-10.00 to finish 18th overall, while Noonan placed 13th in the javelin competition's B division with a mark of 184-6.00.

“We've got to make sure people are getting themselves ready for competition,” VanHootegem said. “Opportunities are what you ask for as an athlete. The preparation and training are there so you have to take advantage of these competitions. We're a little disappointed for sure, but there's more to come.”

The Sooners resume action on Friday at 9:35 a.m. with the foursome of Ama Pipi, Daunicia Demerson, Daye Shon Roberson and Leya Buchanan running in the 4x100-meter relay prelims followed by the men's prelims in the same event. Field events for the Sooners on day three are slated to start at 10 a.m. and feature Greg Vann in the long jump.

Live results from the Texas Relays are available at Prime Time Timing and Friday's live broadcasts are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. on the Longhorn Network. A full recap will be posted at the conclusion of action each day on SoonerSports.com.
