LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team ended a five-city, 10-game, 15-day road swing with a 5-2 win at Little Rock at Gary Hogan Field on Tuesday night. The Sooners improved to 12-13-1 overall to end a four-game slide, while the Trojans evened their record at 12-12 and saw a six-game win streak come to an end.
Trailing 1-0 after the second, senior right fielder Alex Wise (Neosho, Mo.) led off the top of the third with a double to the wall in center field. He was sacrificed to third and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Freshmen Hunter Southerland (Oklahoma City) and Cade Harris (Leona, Texas) followed with two-out singles to start a Sooner rally. After a walk loaded the bases, junior first baseman Jack Flansburg (Orange, Calif.) lined a base hit to right-center that scored a pair and put OU in front, 3-1.
Oklahoma would score in three consecutive innings as it added a run in the fourth and fifth. Junior designated hitter Austin O'Brien (Owasso, Okla.) led off the top of the fourth with a base hit up the middle. Wise then dropped a one-out double down the left field line. O'Brien went first-to-third and scored on the ball misplayed in left. The Sooners could have gotten more in the inning, but a double off the wall in left-center by freshman catcher Domenic DeRenzo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was taken back after an appeal was made at first base that he did not touch the bag.
In the fifth, Southerland led off with his second single of the game, which would be the Sooners' seventh and final hit of the night. Southerland was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a bases loaded-walk issued to freshman center fielder Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas).
Six Oklahoma pitchers combined to give up 10 hits and four walks, but were aided by four double plays, including three on the ground. Freshman right-hander Kyle Tyler (Oklahoma City) got his first career win in four innings of work. Tyler (1-0) threw 72 pitches and allowed on unearned run on four hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts. Junior shortstop Sheldon Neuse (Fort Worth, Texas) moved to the mound for the ninth and struck out two in a perfect fame to record his fourth save of the season.
Lefty Will Hazen (1-3) took the loss for Little Rock. He surrendered three runs on three hits in 2.2 innings. At the plate, the Trojans were led by left fielder Ryan Scott, who went 3-for-4.
The Sooners return home Friday night for a 7:00 pm contest against Texas at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The game will be nationally televised on FS1.
