NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team opened up its weekend series against Texas with a 6-1 win in front of 1,392 at L. Dale Mitchell Park on Friday night. The win marked the first for the Sooners over the Longhorns at home since 2008 as they improved to 13-13-1 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12.
Oklahoma hitters totaled three home runs in support of freshman right-hander Chris Andritsos (The Woodlands, Texas). Andritsos (4-2) last a season-high 7.2 innings. He struck out five and allowed just one run as he scattered five hits without issuing a walk.
“To play a rivalry game like that and to play relaxed, that goes a long way with a growth of an athlete,” stated head coach Pete Hughes, who won his 600th career game. “I was impressed with our young guys tonight. They didn't get caught up in the moment. They caught up in trying to play a good game. That's the mindset you need to play games like this.”
Junior first baseman Jack Flansburg (Orange, Calif.) got the offense going with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first. Junior left fielder Ben Hollas (Longview, Texas) walked and junior shortstop Sheldon Neuse (Fort Worth, Texas) bounced a ground-rule double over the wall at the 410' mark to the right of center to put two on ahead of Flansburg. Flansburg's home run deep to right was his fourth of the season.
“We've been waiting for some offense for a while, and it was just a relief when Flansburg hit that homerun,” said Hughes. “I think it relaxed everybody, so that was a lot of fun at the right time.”
Texas (11-15, 2-2) got a run back in the top of the third. Shortstop Kody Clemens singled with one down and scored on a double to the track in right off the bat of third baseman Tres Barrera.
The Sooners got the bats going again in the fourth as junior designated hitter Austin O'Brien (Owasso, Okla.) lifted a leadoff-home run to right. Sophomore second baseman Kyle Mendenhall (Carlsbad, Calif.) then singled up the middle and freshman catcher Domenic DeRenzo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) blasted a two-run shot to left that pushed the OU lead to 6-1.
Senior right-hander Keaton Hernandez (Palm Springs, Calif.) pitched the final 1.1 innings of the game for OU. He gave up just one hit and struck out two.
Right-hander Morgan Cooper (1-1) took the loss in a five-inning start. He allowed all six runs on seven hits and three walks, but struck out seven. Right-hander Eric Dunbar came on in relief and pitched three-hitless innings.
Oklahoma outhit Texas, 7-6, in the game. Neuse went 2-for-4 for the Sooners. Three players recorded multi-hit games for the Longhorns, accounting for all six hits, including Barrera at 2-for-4.
Game two of the series is set for a 3:00 pm first pitch on Saturday afternoon. Freshman right-hander Ryan Madden (Westminster, Colo.) gets the ball against Texas lefty Ty Culbreth.
