NEW YORK – OU wrestlers Ryan Millhof and Cody Brewer each earned All-America status at the 2016 NCAA Championships and will wrestle in Saturday morning's consolation rounds. The tournament is being held inside Madison Square Garden.
The Sooners are currently in 14th place with 28 team points. Penn State tops the leaderboard with 114 points and Oklahoma State is in second with 79.5. Iowa rounds out the top three, totaling 77.5 points.
No. 4 Brewer faced No. 1 Nahshon Garrett of Cornell in the evening's semifinals matches, where he was downed by fall in 21 seconds. Brewer will face No. 7 Eric Montoya of Nebraska in Saturday morning's fifth session.
In his quarterfinals match, the redshirt senior defeated No. 5 Jordan Conaway of Penn State by 8-4 decision. Conaway held a 3-2 lead after the opening frame, but Brewer tacked on two takedowns, an escape and the riding-time point to become just the 11th Sooner in program history to earn four-time All-America honors.
“I'm proud of Cody (Brewer),” OU head coach Mark Cody said. “It's one thing to go out and not do anything and he went out on the attack. Usually on the attack you'll come out on the good side but unfortunately he got himself in trouble. I think he has the heart of the lion and tomorrow he will show that. He's meant so much to this program that he's a four time All-American and an NCAA champion, and he's just a tremendous person. I'm proud of the individual that he is. He's set a bench mark for all the guys returning.”
At 125 pounds, No. 5 Millhof entered the consolation bracket after dropping a 16-5 major decision to No. 4 Thomas Gilman of Iowa. The sophomore rallied back in the fourth session's consolation bracket for All-America status and a 4-2 win in SV1 over No. 7 Darian Cruz of Lehigh. Cruz struck first with a late takedown in the first period, but Millhof escaped and earned the riding-time point over the next two periods to finish regulation tied 2-2. Millhof secured a takedown with 11 seconds left in SV1 for the win.
Millhof was downed by No. 9 Dylan Peters with a win by fall in 1:02 in his second session-four match. He will take on No. 10 Connor Schram of Stanford in the seventh-place bout.
“Ryan (Millhof) has come a long way this year,” Cody said. “He hit a few bumps in the road early, but I think he's starting to find himself and figure out what works and what doesn't. He avenged a loss to the kid from Lehigh and then beat him to become an All-American. He had to show a lot of grit to take that match into overtime and he did just that. We're very proud of him. When we were walking over to the hotel he was already talking about what he needs to do to improve going forward.”
Redshirt junior Matt Reed was eliminated in the tournament's consolation bracket after dropping a 2-0 decision to No. 11 Myles Martin of Ohio State in session three and falling to Casey Kent of Pennsylvania in 6:48 in Friday's evening session at 174 pounds.
At 149 pounds, freshman Davion Jeffries was eliminated in the wrestlebacks on Friday morning. Jeffries defeated No. 13 Matthew Kraus of Arizona State before dropping an 11-2 major decision to No. 12 Geo Martinez of Boise State for his second loss of the tournament.
Redshirt junior Clark Glass (165 pounds) topped Columbia's Tyrel White on Friday morning, 5-3, but was defeated, 5-2, by Anthony Perrotti of Rutgers later in the session in his elimination match.
In the heavyweight division, Ross Larson stormed out to a win by fall in 1:29 over No. 6 Denzel Dejournette of Appalachian State before dropping a 10-6 decision to Tanner Hall of ASU to be eliminated.
“Several of the guys who competed here watched individuals who they had beaten during the season get on the podium, and that has to be a motivator for them,” Cody said. “The attitude has to be that we're going right back to work the week after next, and I think they're willing to do that. Being here watching this tournament is a motivator for all of our guys. There was a lot of excitement and buzz in the building and I think it's great.”
Millhof and Brewer will compete in Saturday morning's session five, beginning at 10 a.m. CT. Live results can be found on TrackWrestling.com and fans can watch live on ESPN3.
