NEW YORK – All six OU wrestlers are still alive at the NCAA Championships and three Sooners will compete in Friday morning's quarterfinal matches. The national tournament is being held inside Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Sophomore Ryan Millhof (125 pounds), redshirt senior Cody Brewer (133 pounds) and redshirt junior Matt Reed (174 pounds) each went 2-0 on the tournament's opening day to earn berths into the championship round of eight.  Freshman Davion Jeffries (149 pounds), redshirt junior Clark Glass (165 pounds) and redshirt junior Ross Larson (HWT) will compete in session three's consolation round, slated to start at 10 a.m. CT.

“The guys who won today are doing a good job of sticking to the individual strategies,” OU head coach Mark Cody said. “That's what a lot of these big matches are going to come down to. We have to set a good plan in place for tomorrow for each individual match. At this point, everyone is healthy and feeling good.”

The Sooners are currently tied for ninth place, totaling 13 points over the first two sessions. Penn State is in first with 27.5 points and Ohio State and Oklahoma State share second with 24.

In the tournament's opening session, No. 5 Millhof downed Air Force's Drew Romero in a 6-0 decision at 125 pounds. The sophomore scored a takedown in the first frame and held a 2-0 lead through two periods, before securing an escape, a takedown and the riding-time point for the win. The evening bout pitted Millhof against his former high school teammate Sean Russell of Edinboro. The only points of the match came from a Millhof escape in the second period to give him a 1-0 win. He will face No. 4 Thomas Gilman of Iowa in tomorrow morning's quarterfinals.

At 133 pounds, returning national champ Brewer defeated N.C. State's Jamal Morris in his first bout of the tournament. Brewer struck first, tallying two takedowns in the opening period for a 4-1 advantage. The redshirt senior extended his lead to 7-2 after two periods and tacked on a reversal and the riding-time point in the final period for the bonus-point victory. In the second session, Brewer totaled four takedowns, a 4-point nearfall, an escape and riding time for a 14-4 major decision over No. 13 Cameron Kelly of Ohio. Brewer was the second Sooner of the evening to earn a quarterfinal berth, and he will take on No. 5 Jordan Conaway of Penn State.

Reed secured the most exciting OU match of the day with a 16-9 decision over No. 3 Blaise Butler of Mizzou in the morning session. Reed took control of the first period, notching a takedown, two 2-point and one 4-point nearfalls and an escape to hold a 13-3 advantage after the opening period. Reed held on, securing three escapes over the next two periods, for the win.

The redshirt junior continued his dominance in his second bout of the championships with an 11-5 decision over No. 14 Nick Kee of Appalachian State. The bout was tied at 3-3 at the end of one, but Reed tallied three takedowns, an escape and the riding time over the final two frames to advance to the quarters. He will face No. 11 Myles Martin of Ohio State in Friday's third session.

In the 165-pound division, No. 15 Glass downed Lehigh's Ryan Preisch in his first match of the championships, 2-1, in TB2. Each wrestler earned an escape to finish regulation tied 1-1. The match went to tiebreakers, where Glass escaped in TB1 for a 2-1 advantage. The redshirt junior rode out Preisch in TB2 for the win.  Glass then dropped a 9-1 decision to No. 2 Isaac Jordan of Wisconsin in the evening session. He will take on Tyrel White of Columbia in tomorrow morning's consolation rounds.

At heavyweight, Larson recorded an 8-4 decision over No. 12 Billy Smith of Rutgers in his opening bout. The redshirt junior jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the first period and secured a takedown and an escape in the second to extend his advantage to 7-3. Larson picked up the riding time point in the final frame for the decision. In his second-session match, Larson dropped a 10-2 major decision to No. 5 Adam Coon of Michigan. He is pitted against No. 6 Denzel Dejournette of Appalachian State in tomorrow morning's consolation round.

After dropping his opening match, 3-2, to No. 3 Lavion Mayes of Mizzou, Jeffries recorded a win by fall in 4:58 over Gardner-Webb's Chris Vassar in the consolation pigtails. The freshman totaled a takedown, two 2-point and one 4-point nearfalls and a penalty point to control the match, 11-0, at the time of the pin. Jeffries downed Brown's Steven Galiardo by 6-1 decision in the night's consolation round to move on in the wrestlebacks, where he will face No. 13 Matthew Kraus of Arizona State
