NORMAN – The White team edged the Red squad, 21-16, in the 2016-17 Red-White Scrimmage, held Wednesday night in McCasland Field House. The scrimmage is held annually to kick off the upcoming wrestling season.
“I thought that the matches were pretty competitive tonight,” OU head coach Lou Rosselli said. “I think that the energy level needs to increase. We need to put more points on the board. We had a couple deficiencies that certain guys have, but overall, it was a good start. I don't think that anybody expected to be perfect right now, so it's something to build on, and we just need to keep getting better. It's just the way it is. March is a long ways away.”
Freshman Dalton Duffield (White) and redshirt freshman Christian Moody (Red) started out the dual at 125 pounds, with Duffield recording a win by fall in 1:47. Duffield jumped out with an early takedown before the pin.
At 133 pounds, junior Trae Blackwell (White) downed sophomore transfer Cody Karstetter (Red) by 9-2 decision. Blackwell held a 4-1 lead after the opening frame and rode out Karstetter in the second. He tacked on a reversal and a takedown in the third and secured 4:46 in riding time for the win.
Redshirt sophomore Jacob Rubio (Red) and Aaron O'Brien (White) wrestled off at 141 pounds, with Rubio earning a major-decision win. Rubio collected six takedowns and a reversal en route to a 16-5 victory.
The 149-pound bout was wrestled earlier in the day due to class conflicts, with sophomore Davion Jeffries (White) defeating redshirt sophomore Noah Teaney (Red), 2-0. Jeffries recorded an escape and secured riding time for the only points of the match.
Redshirt sophomore Jared Schieber (White) and transfer DaWaylon Barnes (Red) faced off at 157 pounds with Barnes registering a 6-0 win. The junior recorded two takedowns, an escape and secured riding time to total six points.
At 165 pounds, junior Yoanse Mejias (Red) posted a 4-3 decision win over redshirt senior Clark Glass (White). Glass escaped to begin the second for a 1-0 lead entering the final frame, but Mejias was on the attack in the third, logging a takedown and a 2-point nearfall for the win.
In the 174-pound bout, redshirt senior Matt Reed (Red) matched up with redshirt freshman Hayden Hansen (White). The match was tied at 2-2 entering the final frame, but Reed escaped and tacked on a last-minute takedown for a 5-2 decision over Hansen.
Junior Andrew Dixon (White) defeated freshman Seth Fritts (Red) by 8-1 decision at 184 pounds. Dixon earned three takedowns, an escape and the riding-time point in the win.
At 197 pounds, redshirt senior Brad Johnson (Red) and redshirt sophomore Lance Dixon (White) faced off. The bout was knotted at 1-1 at the end of regulation, but Johnson scored a quick takedown in TB1 for a 3-1 victory.
In the final match of the night, redshirt senior Ross Larson recorded a win by fall over redshirt sophomore Rex Shotts in 2:21. Larson led 10-1 via two takedowns, a 2-point nearfall and a 4-point nearfall at the time of the pin.
