COLUMBIA, S.C. — The No. 25 Oklahoma soccer team saw its historic season come to a close in the second round of the NCAA Championship, falling to No. 4 BYU by a score of 2-1 on Thursday at Stone Soccer Stadium.
Throughout the match, the Sooners (14-7-2) had some moments of offensive threat but were not able to find the back of the net until the 82nd minute when junior midfielder Lizzie Luallin connected with senior defender Rachel Ressler for the score.
“Congratulations to Jennifer (Rockwood) and her staff and her team as they progress forward," fifth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said. "A great team, one we were excited to play because we knew it would bring out the best in us. It certainly did that, and we wish them the best as they progress through the tournament now.”
OU finished the contest with six shots, while the Cougars (18-2-1) tallied 14. The Sooners' looks were efficient with four of their shots going on goal. Senior midfielder Jemma Cota led the Sooners with two shots, while fellow seniors Liz Keester, Shiloh Price and Madison Saliba all added one. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade, OU's leader for single-season and career shutouts, corralled two saves in the contest.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead in the 11th minute as senior forward Ashley Hatch recorded her 19th score of the season, heading in a cross from classmate Michele Vasconcelos. Vasconcelos then gave BYU a 2-0 advantage as she scored in the 64th minute.
With time running out, OU kept pushing, resulting in a goal from Ressler, her fifth of the season. Following a pass from Luallin in the box, Ressler was able to beat BYU keeper Hannah Clark for the score.
In 2016, the Sooners celebrated the 20th anniversary of their program and put together a season for the record books, highlighted by a program-record 14 wins and six All-Big 12 selections and their first-ever victory in the NCAA Championship game with a 1-0 win over SMU last Friday.
"Sometimes you're beat but as a group you're never conquered, and that's been part of our mantra throughout the season," Potter said. "Overall I can't help but reflect on a group of players that I'm incredibly proud of, a season that we're going to look back on after the 'ouch' of this has gone away."
