NORMAN – After a win by fall over a ranked opponent, OU wrestling freshman Davion Jeffries earned Big 12 Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.

The Broken Arrow, Okla., native pinned No. 20 Gabe Moreno of Iowa State in the 149-pound match on Friday night inside the Lloyd Noble Center. The bout was knotted at 4-4 before Jeffries recorded the fall in 3:58 to give the Sooners a 16-0 advantage. OU (9-2, 4-1) went on to win the contest, 28-9, securing its fourth consecutive dual victory.

Jeffries has posted an impressive 9-2 dual record and 12-5 overall record as a true freshman. His accolade marks the first conference honor of his career and the first for the Sooners since Andrew Howe took the award in December of 2013. This is only the second time this season a freshman has captured the award.

Jeffries and the No. 7-ranked Sooners return to  the mat this Saturday, Jan. 30, at 2:30 p.m. CT when they travel to Columbia, Mo., for a dual with No. 5 Missouri inside the Hearnes Center. The team returns home on Feb. 14 for a matchup with new Big 12 foe South Dakota State, slated for a 2 p.m. CT start in McCasland Field House. Tickets are available online or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Office at 405-325-2424.
