Sooners in the NFL: Wild Card Weekend

January 15, 2016 | Football

NORMAN – Of the 14 former Sooners that made the NFL Playoffs, the most for any Big 12 school, six were winners on Wild Card weekend. Add those six to the five former Sooners that had byes, and 11 Sooners will be taking part in the Divisional round.

Kansas City 30, Houston 0

With four players on its roster, Kansas City is home to more former Sooners than any other team in the NFL. Three were made active for the Wild Card against the Texans as the Chiefs rolled to their first playoff win since 1994.

Donald Stephenson started at right tackle, while defensive back Jamell Fleming and long snapped James Winchester both saw playing time for Kansas City. Meanwhile, defensive tackle David King was made inactive by the Chiefs.

Up next for Kansas City is a visit to No. 2 New England, which features rookie linebacker Geneo Grissom. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:35 p.m. CT Saturday on CBS.

Pittsburgh 18, Cincinnati 16

With starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger having to leave the game temporarily due to injury, backup Landry Jones saw brief action for Pittsburgh.

Jones entered the game early in the fourth quarter and completed 2-5 passes for 11 yards. He was also sacked once and threw an interception before Roethlisberger re-entered the game with just over a minute remaining to lead Pittsburgh to a miracle win.

Pittsburgh now travels to top-seeded Denver for a Sunday game at 3:40 p.m. CT on CBS. The Broncos feature former Sooners linebacker Corey Nelson.

Seattle 10, Minnesota 9

In a game played in sub-zero temperatures with limited offense, Adrian Peterson saw his season come to an end after the Vikings missed a last-minute field goal in a 10-9 loss to the Seahawks.

The NFL's rushing champion, Peterson was held to just 45 yards rushing on 23 carries and two receptions for 13 yards. He was bottled up all day, recording just four rushes that went for at least five yards.

Peterson also had an unfortunate fumble early in the fourth quarter that resulted in a Seahawks field goal.

Seattle's next game is at No. 1 Carolina, which features rookie offensive tackle Daryl Williams. That game will be played Sunday at 12:05 p.m. CT on FOX.

Green Bay 35, Washington 18

In the only Wild Card game to have former Sooners on both teams, rookie fullback Aaron Ripkowski and the Green Bay Packers went on the road to top Washington's Trent Williams and Tress Way.

Ripkowski saw playing time but did not record any stats for the Packers.

On the other side of the ball, Williams started at left tackle for Washington, while Way punted five times for an average of 44.8 yards per kick. Three kicks landed inside the 20, and his longest boot of the day went for 60 yards.

Ripkowski and the Packers face two more former Sooners in the Divisional Round when they visit No. 2 Arizona in a game Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. CT on NBC. The Cardinals feature safety Tony Jefferson and tight end Jermaine Gresham on their roster.
