NORMAN Following a barrage of early scoring, the Oklahoma soccer team rolled to an 8-1 victory over UTSA on Sunday afternoon inside John Crain Stadium, tying the school mark for most goals in a single contest.

The three other times OU reached the eight-goal mark were against Drury on Sept. 1, 1997 (8-1), Alabama A&M on Aug. 31, 2007 (8-0) and most recently Francis Marion on Oct. 8, 2010 (8-0).

The Sooners (3-2-0 overall) were led by a hat trick from junior Caren Nelson, who matched the school standard with her three goals. Nelson's scores came in the 12th, 14th and 17th minutes. The other two hat tricks in OU program history came from Logan Womack vs. Baylor (Sept. 27, 2002) and Whitney Palmer (Aug. 30, 2009).

OU came out firing, with its first goal coming in the second minute from sophomore Lizzie Luallin. From there, the Sooners scored six more goals in the first 17 minutes of the match. The scores came from freshman Paige Welch, freshman Emily Parker and Nelson.

Fourth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said he is pleased with the manner in which his team started out the game.

“The movement was good and the opportunities came and we punished them. It was very encouraging for the start of the game,” Potter said. “I think our patience and our discipline and timing of movement was good, and that created the opportunities that occurred. Make no mistake, the hardest thing to do is score goals, and the fact that we score multiple is very encouraging.”

Nelson said one key of the team scoring so much so fast was intensity.

“I think coming out and working hard: the harder you work, the luckier you get, so just being able to connect passes and go with pace and power (was a key),” Nelson explained.

In the second minute, Luallin tapped in the ball following teammate Liz Keester's blocked shot. Then, in the seventh minute, Keester assisted on a score to Welch. The goals were the first of the season for both Luallin and Welch.

Off a great feed from sophomore Anna Crawford in the 10th minute, Parker sent an easy goal to the back of the net. Parker scored again in the 16th minute.

Crawford also assisted on Nelson's first and third goals of the afternoon. Her three assists set a school record.

Sophomore Tori Bowman scored OU's lone goal of the second half, doing so off a free kick from fellow sophomore Chelsea Jackson in the 59th minute. In total, the Sooners had seven assists in the contest.

OU junior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade improved to 2-2-0 on the season with the win, allowing just one UTSA score. The Roadrunners (0-5-0 overall) got on the board in the 82nd minute when senior Savannah Struck tallied her second score of the year.

The Sooners outshot the Roadrunners 28 to four. Fourteen of OU's shots were on goal.

Up next, the Sooners head West for a pair of road matches next weekend. On Friday, Sept. 11, OU will face Santa Clara at 9:30 p.m. CT before playing at No. 2 Stanford at 3 p.m. CT on Sunday, Sept. 13.
