SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Oklahoma soccer team struggled to get its offense going and was held scoreless for the first time this season, falling by a score of 2-0 against Santa Clara on Friday night. The match was played at Buck Shaw Stadium.
The Sooners (3-3-0 overall) registered a season-low seven shots, two of which were on goal, in the contest with the Broncos (4-2-0 overall). OU recorded several late shots and created scoring chances for itself but could not find the back of the net.
"The disappointment is not in the defeat but in the manner in which it happened," OU head coach Matt Potter said. "Santa Clara is a perennial top program and I believe we contributed enough to the game to get a good result. Mental mistakes at critical times cost us, and that was the difference."
Sophomore Lizzie Luallin led the Sooners with two shots, while senior Laura Rayfield, junior Liz Keester, sophomores Madeline Brem and Tori Bowman and freshman Emily Parker each took a shot apiece.
For most of the first half, the defensive lines held strong with both teams getting very few offensive opportunities before Santa Clara senior midfielder Dani Weatherholt opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 32nd minute.
With 25 seconds left before the break, freshman forward Grace Cutler gave the Broncos a momentum goal and a 2-0 advantage when she tapped in her second score of the season. The 2-0 score would hold for the rest of the match despite the Sooners' looks at the goal late in the contest.
OU junior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade fell to 2-3-0 on the season with the loss. She played the full 90 minutes and had three saves. For Santa Clara, senior Andi Tostanoski tallied the win in goal and grabbed two saves in the contest.
The Sooners limited the Broncos to 10 shots, but half of those were on goal.
OU will wrap up its weekend on the West Coast on Sunday, Sept. 13 with a 3 p.m. CT match against No. 2 Stanford. The contest will take place in Stanford, Calif., at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
"We should feel confident in our abilities as we have again shown the ability to play with and against a top opponent," Potter said after the Santa Clara match. "We now prepare for another challenge in Stanford. These are the stages we want to be on regularly."
