NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team won its home NIKE Invitational with a 3-0 sweep of Central Arkansas in the finale at McCasland Field House on Saturday afternoon. The Sooners improved to 2-4, while the Sugar Bears dropped to 1-5.

Oklahoma's win came by scores of 25-12, 25-23 and 25-14 for its second sweep of the weekend. As a team, the Sooners hit .360 with a .500 hitting percentage in the first set. The match was close early with OU in front 8-7, but an 8-0 run put the first set out of reach.

“I think offensively we were doing some very good things,” assessed 12th-year head coach Santiago Restrepo. “We're definitely generating a lot more kills. But we are missing too many serves. We've got to fix that and get rid of the bonehead mistakes –  mistakes that are maybe technical and just aren't polished yet.”

Redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) and junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) each earned NIKE Invitational All-Tournament honors. Ward hit .333 with eight kills and seven digs, while Gardiner led all players in digs at 11 to go with nine kills on a .333 attack rate. For the tournament, Ward led the Sooners with 3.73 kills per set and hit .345. Gardiner averaged 2.91 kills and 2.82 digs per set in the tournament.

“In difficult situations, we need somebody to step up and say, 'hey, I'm going to lead us',” continued Restrepo. “Madison [Ward] shows glimpses of it. She's a very powerful hitter and athletic, but also needs to be one of those players that steps up.”

Freshman outside hitter Madison Drescher (Southlake, Texas) reached double-digit kills for the first time in her career as she led Oklahoma with 10 on an impressive .467 attack rate to go with five blocks. Junior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas) added five blocks and six kills, while hitting .600.

Senior Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) and freshman Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) split the setting duties in the Sooner offense. Doyle collected 19 assists and eight digs to Alford's 15 and four. Senior Taylor Migliazzo (Kansas City, Mo.) notched 10 digs in her return to the libero position.

For Central Arkansas, outside hitter Heather Schnars tallied 10 kills and setter Amy South passed out 24 assists.

Oklahoma is on the road next weekend at the Borderland Invitational co-hosted by New Mexico State and UTEP. The Sooner and the Aggies will play in the opener in Las Cruces on Thursday, September 10 and 8:00 pm CT.
