NORMAN — On a rainy Sunday afternoon at John Crain Field, the Oklahoma soccer team set the tone early and upset No. 18 Arizona State with a 2-0 shutout victory.
The Sooners (5-4-0 overall) defended well throughout the game, especially in the opening period as they cleared most of the opportunities the Sun Devils (4-3-0 overall) had at the goal. OU outshot Arizona State by a mark of 16-11, including six to five in shots on goal.
Fourth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said the victory came against a quality squad and is one that his team earned.
“The first thing we need to recognize is how good of an opponent we just played,” Potter said. “I've had the privilege of playing against Kevin (Boyd)'s teams for a long, long time. If you win the game (against his teams) then you've earned the right to win the game, that's the first thing.”
OU opened the scoring in the 42nd minute on a goal from junior forward Caren Nelson. On the play, freshman forward/midfielder Kaylee Dao fed it to junior midfielder Shiloh Price, who crossed it to Nelson in the right side of the box to assist on the score. The goal was the fourth of the season for Nelson.
“The way our schedule is designed is to play against great teams and the reality is the first goal is an important mark in the game. Today served to show that again,” Potter said of getting on the board first. “The most important part was to stay defensively organized, and we did that."
In the 70th minute, senior Laura Rayfield built the OU advantage to 2-0 off a penalty kick. The opportunity for the score came following an Arizona State handball in the box. Rayfield has scored three times this season, twice off penalty kicks and once off a free kick.
OU junior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade recorded five saves in the shutout victory, moving to 3-4-0 overall on the season. Arizona State redshirt senior Chandler Morris fell to 4-3-0 overall and had four saves in a full game in goal on Sunday.
It was the third time this season that the Sooners have faced a ranked opponent. In the other two contests, they fell at No. 11 South Carolina and at No. 2 Stanford by scores of 2-1 in two overtimes and one overtime, respectively.
Potter said that Sunday's win shows the strides the OU program has taken and continues to take.
“We want to be one of the teams in the country that's one of the elite programs,” Potter explained. “That takes time. We're building towards that. This (game) is another indicator that we're moving in the right direction.”
The Sooners continue their homestand when they open Big 12 play next weekend. OU will welcome No. 17 Texas Tech to Norman at 7 p.m. CT on Friday before hosting Iowa State at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Office at (800) 456-GoOU.
