NORMAN After two overtime periods, the Oklahoma soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw with No. 15 Texas Tech in its opening match of Big 12 play on Friday night at John Crain Field.

Both defenses were locked in throughout the match, allowing limited scoring opportunities. The Sooners (5-4-1 overall, 0-0-1 Big 12) recorded 13 shots on the night, and the Red Raiders (6-1-3, 0-0-1 Big 12) had 14.

OU held Texas Tech to just one shot on goal, which it did not allow until the 66th minute, while tallying five shots on goal itself.

A potential momentum swing came in the 70th minute when OU junior Caren Nelson was given her second yellow card of the night following a tackle. The penalty resulted in a red card and Nelson's ejection and left OU down a player for the rest of the contest.

However, the short-handed Sooners responded by continuing to hold the Red Raiders scoreless over the last 40:20 of the match.

Fourth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said that the performance from his squad was impressive.

“I thought it was two great college teams going at it,” Potter said. “There were ebbs and flows for both teams, one minute one team was on top and the other kind of had to adjust to that and then vice versa. We expected that, but we got something out of the game obviously to go down to 10 men and fight that long and even create some positive things. Texas Tech, make no mistake, is one of the top teams in the country so to do what we did was fantastic.”

OU nearly found the golden goal in the 106th minute when sophomore defender/forward Jordyn Knox-Webster sent a shot just wide into the side of the net.

Sophomore midfielder Lizzie Luallin led the Sooners with three shots, while Knox-Webster and freshman forward/midfielder Kaylee Dao had two apiece.

With the draw, the Sooners remain unbeaten at home this season with a 4-0-1 record. OU enters Sunday's match against Iowa State having not lost in its last three contests.

OU junior defender Rachel Ressler said OU responded well during the game, staying calm and sticking with what it knows.

“We just really worked hard and fought as a team and stuck to what we know and what we do best,” Ressler said. “This is a good start. Still being undefeated at home is a great feeling. It's just a confidence booster.”

OU junior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade moved to 3-4-1 on the season, while Texas Tech junior Lauren Watson is now 6-1-3. Stade had one save on Friday night, and Watson had five.

The game marked the fourth time the Sooners have gone into extra periods this season, three of which went into double overtime. OU is now 0-3-1 in such matches.

The Red Raiders were the fourth OU opponent ranked within the top 25 of the NSCAA/Continental Tires poll this season. The Sooners have posted a 1-2-1 record in those games.

The Sooners close out their four-game homestand by hosting Iowa State at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Office at (800) 456-GoOU.
