Uncommon Commitment

The Oklahoma Sooners are committed to helping the community that supports them. Playing for the University of Oklahoma means being in the headlines, but it also gives Sooner student-athletes an opportunity to give back to Norman and the surrounding communities. Sherri Coale and the women's basketball team capitalize on this opportunity with the same passion OU fans bring to the local arena or stadium. No team in the OU Athletics Department has made more of a commitment to volunteer service that the women's basketball team. In fact, Coach Coale's squad is arguable as active as any team in the nation. This year was no different as evident in the squad winning the CHAMPS/Life Skills Team Competition.

The women's basketball team stayed continuously active throughout the year, volunteering at the OU Children's Hospital, the OK Kids Korral, and many Sooner Junior events. The Sooners also partook in the annual summer "Mission of Hope" Haiti trip and headed into local elementary schools for a weekly 'Sooner Big Sis' visit throughout the 2014-15 academic year. The Sooners gave their time at each organization consistently throughout the year. In addition to volunteering, the team participated FCA, SAAC, and BridgeBuilders events. They also supported other student-athletes, attending men's basketball, soccer, wrestling, baseball, softball and many other home athletic contests.

Throughout the 2014-15 academic year, each Oklahoma women's basketball player spent an hour a week at a local elementary school reading to and spending time with a specific classroom.

In May of 2010, once final exams were done, members of the OU women's basketball team packed their bags, ready for the first flight out of Oklahoma...to earthquake-ravaged Haiti.

While most of the University of Oklahoma's student body left Norman at the close of another semester to return home, members of the Sooner women's basketball family past and present, joined a party formed by former scout leader Adam Barnett, now College Director at Journey Church, set to spread a mission of hope to a suffering community.

The original seven-day trip in 2010 has now turned into an annual trip, with the fifth taking place in May of 2014 and the sixth heading to Haiti this past Saturday (May 9).

Each year, the voyage takes the Sooners through the crumbled streets of the Haitian capital to the city of Titaneyan, where they help work at the Mission of Hope, a complex of a clinic, orphanage and school.

The Sooners took the 20-mile trip North once a month throughout the 2014-15 academic year to make dinner for and play with the residents at the OK Kids Korral, an amazing project of the Toby Keith Foundation.

Opened in January of 2014, the OK Kids Korral provides a cost-free, convenient and comfortable home for pediatric cancer patients (and their families) receiving treatment at The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center, Peggy & Charles Stephenson Cancer Center and other nearby facilities.
