Billy Tubbs Reunion Show Debuts Tuesday

Tubbs Reunion Part Two Debuts Friday

February 20, 2015 | Men's Basketball

NORMAN — Part two of the "Billy Tubbs Reunion Special" will debut Friday, Feb. 20, at 9 p.m. CT on FS Oklahoma and FS Southwest Plus. A special presentation of the Sooner Sports TV Crimson Classic series, the show focuses on the illustrious and colorful career of the former Oklahoma head men's basketball coach. It features candid conversation among Tubbs, his former players and staff members, and others.

Recorded in the Lloyd Noble Center men's practice gym in August during OU's basketball alumni weekend and moderated by Toby Rowland, the mostly light-hearted program focuses on the most significant and memorable moments of Tubbs' 14-year Oklahoma tenure (1980-94).

Topics explored in the 60-minute follow-up show include OU's frenetic "Billy Ball" style of play, three-time All-American Wayman Tisdale, the 1987-88 team that played in the national championship game, Tubbs taking the public address microphone vs. Missouri in 1989, OU's 173-point game in 1989-90 and tales from the recruiting trail.

Some of the many program participants include former players Steve Bajema, Shawn Clark, Terry Evans, Ricky Grace, Skeeter Henry, David Johnson, Darryl "Choo" Kennedy, Stacey King, David Little, Tim McCalister, Bo Overton, William Tisdale, Tommy Tubbs, Bryatt Vann and Chuck Watson.

Also joining the discussion are current OU head coach Lon Kruger and team trainer Alex Brown, former Sooner and current Portland Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts, former OU player and regent Tom McCurdy, former assistant coach Mike Anderson, former NCAA game official Ed Hightower and sports radio host Al Eschbach, as well as Regina Tisdale, wife of the late Wayman Tisdale.

Revered by Oklahoma fans and disliked by many outside the state, the brash, unapologetic and sometimes side-splittingly funny Tubbs presided over one of the most successful eras of Oklahoma Basketball. OU's all-time leader in victories with a 332-132 (.716) record, Tubbs directed the Sooners to nine NCAA Tournaments and watched his teams routinely rack up 100-point performances. His 1987-88, 1988-89 and 1989-90 teams, which all earned No. 1 NCAA Tournament seeds, each averaged more than 100 points a game.
