NORMAN – Through the opening day of the 2015 Cliff Keen Invitational, the University of Oklahoma wrestling team is in first place with 85 points after securing five spots in the tournament's semi-final round. The event is being held at the Cashman Center in Las Vegas, Nev.
Ryan Millhof (125 pounds), Cody Brewer (133 pounds), Davion Jeffries (149 pounds), Clark Glass (165 pounds) and Ross Larson (285 pounds) will all five advance to Saturday's semi-final round after going a perfect 3-0 in Friday's opening day.
Millhof registered a decision, a major decision and a win by injury default on the day, including a win over No. 8 Chasen Tolbert of Utah Valley.
Brewer's 3-0 record consisted of a decision, major decision and a technical fall. The redshirt senior has now collected seven bonus-point victories in his eight matches this season.
Freshman Jeffries became the third Sooner on the night to qualify for the semi-final round, defeating No. 15 Alex Pantaleo of Michigan in the quarter-final bout. Jeffries posted a 15-4 major decision win and a win by fall (3:55) in the round of 32 and round of 16, respectively.
Redshirt junior Glass claimed two major decisions in the opening day and a 6-3 decision over Columbia's Tyrel White in the quarter-final round, and classmate Larson recorded two wins by fall en route to his advancement to the semi-final match.
OU Head Coach Mark Cody said it was exciting to see his team perform at a high caliber with other top-ranked programs.
“Overall we had a great day,” Cody said. “We won several hard-fought battles today, and we have to be ready to come back tomorrow with the same mindset. There are several teams who are on our heels at this point.”
Missouri is in second place with 81.5 points, and Minnesota sits in third at 78.5. Cornell and Virginia Tech round out the top five with 69 points and 58.5 points, respectively.
Redshirt junior Matt Reed registered two falls in the rounds of 32 and 16 before dropping a 3-1 decision in the 174-pound quarter-finals to No. 17 Jadaen Bernstein of Navy. He and Brad Johnson (197 pounds) will compete in the second consolation round of eight on Saturday morning. Johnson defeated Purdue's Drake Stein in the first consolation round of eight to advance to Saturday's competition.
Redshirt freshman Lance Dixon (184 pounds) was eliminated in the first consolation round of eight, and Noah Teaney (141 pounds) and Brock Wingbermuehle (157 pounds) were each eliminated in the second consolation round of 16.
Competition will resume Saturday at 11 a.m. CT with the second consolation round of eight.
